I ought this book as well as two others about knifemaking at the same time. And although all three are excellent books on the craft, I have to say that this ones is probably my favorite. This book includes great (almost life-size) photos of the work in progress. I appreciate that aspect of the book because it feels more like "hands" on learning. Aside from that, the authors Jack Lewis and Roger Combs go through every phase of knifemaking with the reader. Subjects covered include (but are not limited to) names for the parts of the knife, tools needed ( and some tools that will ease the making of the knife), types of steel used (and their properties), annealing (hardening), handle shapes and materials, assembly methods, sheaths and pouches, and even decoration of the blades with etching or engraving. The book also goes through the proper angles of edges according to type of knife, and the different types (and properties) of sharpening and honing stones. One thing the authors recommend at the beginning of the book, is for the reader to acquire a knife-making kit as a first project. I will say that the kits can cost as much as some finished knives, and for me, that is not an option. The authors also go through hand-forging your own blades, which really appealed to me. All in all, I would recommend this book to any person desiring to make their own custom-crafted knife, or any serious knife collector wanting to know how the objects in their collection are made.Read full review
