I would say that Chan Marshall’s voice is beautiful not just unique but I’m not going to fight anyone about it. However, I will fight tooth-and-nail against anyone who honestly believes this album to be mediocre or not up to par with say the default words ‘Moon Pix.’ If you fall into one of these categories, piss off and go listen to some Bright Eyes albums or watch reruns of the Grammy’s because you don’t belong near proper music. “Living Proof” will probably end up being one of those generation defining songs in the same way that everyone my age recognizes Portishead’s “Roads” or Jane’s Addiction’s “Jane Says.” At least, this is what I hope. The album opener and title track is painfully intimate—it doesn’t make you uncomfortable but makes you realize that you will never feel as intensely as Marshall’s “I” does. “Lived in Bars” as a delightfully dancing outro that makes you long for the song to go on and on, which is the general sense I have about the whole record—why won’t it keep going. There are well placed horns, subtle strings in the background, and nicely layered vocals (all three in “Could We”). Kids will complain about this being ‘overproduced’ (without ever saying what that means yet still buying Eric Clapton records), but tracks like the haunting “Willie” and anthem-y “The Moon” more than overcome such misplaced disdain.Read full review
This album is the album that all the other ones were leading up to. This is Chan at her most personal. The best tracks here include The Greatest, Lived In Bars, Living Proof, Love & Communication. Perfect for any Cat Power fan, also a great introduction for new fans as well.
This was my first introduction to Cat Power, and I'm really glad it was. The whole album is good, especially if you like Cat Power already. If you've never heard them before, try a song or two out at pandora.com. They're all very similar stylistically, so if you like one, you'll probably like the whole album.
Not many records are warm and soulful as this one! It sounds and feels soulful. This album is deep. Old but new. Cat Power knows what she is doing! Love.
