This is a movie that is still my fathers favorite, and i inherited that. This movie depicts the POW camps (on a more pr friendly view) and these POW's would survive and use physical and mental tools to constantly keep the enemy exhausted, frustrated or asleep. This also has some really big names in it, such as Steve MQueen and others which your kids should know and hopefully enjoy. My ultimate selling point on this movie is not only does it take you back into that era but there are no special effects or altered scenes, you will even notice things like when Mqueen is thrown in the "cooler" you can see the brick wall cutoff and notice that "set" also in the tunnel there are some scenes where you catch a edge or so of the dirt ledge. Ultimately i would recommend this movie to anyone of any age - its good clean fun; i would especially recommend it to your children and or grandchildren its great history in a fun setting and also im sure it will bring back some memories from grandparents who saw the film in theaters, etc. Have a happy holiday and enjoy the flick (bring lots of snacks - i find it extremely difficult to hit pause)Read full review
Perhaps one of the greatest war movies ever made. The war going bad for the Germans and with escaping Allied soldiers disrupting the German's operations, a plan is made to collect all of the escape artists from all of the POW camps and put them all in one new camp; a camp that is totally escape proof. Designated Stalag Luft III in upper Silesia, some 600 British, Canadian, and American POW's were all grouped together. This was Germany's idea of putting all of their bad apples in one basket. All of the guards and officers were top notch and considered elite in their field. For the Allies, it was the answer to a prayer. Never had so many talented escape artists been put together in one place. The film has so many big stars, that they don't even need to be mentioned. The plot is based on a true story that attempted to break out all 600 prisoners. From the first day, a plan was devised to dig three tunnels, knowing that the Germans would be looking for such activity. The plan was that any one of the tunnels were found, the Germans would never suspect another, and never two. The work went on for almost a year, and about 300 eventually escaped in March 1944. These escapes managed to totally disrupt German Command for weeks. Unfortunately most were recaptured and one group of fifty was murdered. This is a movie about courage and the will of soldiers to fight and die for freedom and justice.Read full review

The motion picture is a classic and it is beautifully preserved on this DVD. I am a WWII buff and enjoy movies depicting real history about the war. For the most part, this movie lives up to the realism and drama. There is a little Hollywood theatrics with some of the chase scenes but the movie really captures the essence of what the Great Escape was all about. This is the collector's edition that includes an extra DVD. This DVD has a very interesting set of featurettes on the making of the movie. Also on the extra DVD is a documentory of the real escape that was for the most part cheaply done and boring. I have viewed better documentories on the real escape in the past. I would have liked to have seen more interviews from the cast members of the motion picture about their experiences making the film.Read full review
