A potentially great movie ruined by Jeff Bridges poor "grizzly old man" performance. We all know Jeff Bridges can act, but his choice to shoehorn the same character of the "grizzly old man" into so many roles of later is just plain pathetic. Unlike John Wayne (for example), Jeff Bridges has not spent a lifetime basically portraying himself ( I hope Mr. Bridges is not the "grizzly old man", anyway). ... Where is the "The Fisher King", "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot", etc.?... Whatever....Read the book, I say, as the work is good solid '50's-'60's genre SYFY dystopia.... Logan's Run, anyone? 1984?

I have read the book "The Giver", and to be honest, the book wasn't too exciting to me and it didn't quite catch my attention. But of course most movies do not follow the plot of the book and there are a few changes in the plot for the movie, for the director to modify. The reason I bought this movie is because often after I read a book, I watch the movie to compare what I have imagined and also to see a more visual image of the story. I thought the effects, scenery, and props were good in this movie and I liked the memory parts in the movie where Jonas would receive a memory,I felt like those parts were exciting. What I dislike is the romance in the movie because I felt like the plot revolved more about exposing the truth about the outside world and in a way how their whole system and government were corrupt and that the people deserved to know what feelings and dreams felt like and to actually experience the outside world, which I felt like Lois Lowry was trying to show in this dystopian novel. Which was to show one of our many possible futures since our world today is evolving in many ways. In my opinion this movie was like any movie, I didn't find it greater than the rest or lesser, I felt like it was an average movie like the others which we all would enjoy watching.Read full review

This film, based on Lois Lowry's book, tells the story of a perfect world. Everyone here is happy. When Jonas is 18 years old, he's chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. He enters into training with an old man called 'the Giver' who would give Jonas memories of the "real" world that the rest of the community is hidden from. From the Giver, Jonas learns not only of love and family, but also of pain, war, and all the unhappy truths the world holds. He quickly realizes that his community is fake. Confronted with this reality, Jonas faces difficult choices about his own life and the futures of many people he's become close to. I had a chance to read The Giver when I was in grade school so I was really happy the movie followed along so well with the book.Read full review
This is the first time i ever saw a movie that was actually better than the book! Loved it; the cast is all wonderful, especially Jeff Bridges as the Giver. Don't miss it!!
