I bought this because I absolutely LOVED "The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy"...it was a wealth of useful information and I laughed out loud from cover to cover. However, I was a little disappointed in "The Girlfriends' Guide to Surviving the First Year of Motherhood". Maybe it's because I didn't read it until I was 5 months into my first year, but I didn't find it nearly as funny or enlightening. Also, I desperately wanted it to give me humorous advice about caring for my new baby, but instead it focused almost solely on the mother and the effects of childbirth and motherhood on her mind and body. Not that those aren't important issues, but surviving the first year is just as much (or maybe more) about caring for your baby than dealing with your own personal problems. Overall, it's a decent read -- it just doesn't stand up to its predecessor.Read full review
This book is an excellent follow-up to the "Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy"! It is a wry account of all of the ups and downs of new mommyhood that had me tearing up with laughter. I have given the Girlfriend's guides to all of my expecting friends, and they absolutely love them, they are easy to read...fun...and hilariously candid. I think they are just as essential (and a lot more enjoyable) as the "What to Expect" series. You can't miss if this is something you're considering giving a new mom as a gift...and if you're browsing for yourself, this is a good choice for an easy to read and light-hearted approach to your new spit-up-stained,over-tired,sour-milk-scented journey into parenthood!
I absolutley LOVE this book!!!!! I bought it because I had The Girlfriends guide to pregnancy and did nothing but Laugh through the whole thing! Vicki Iovine is so funny, down to earth and completely right about the way women feel and think when they are going through this special life changing event! I would absolutley recommend both of these books to every pregnant women out there, whether it's your first baby or your fifth!!!!!
I laughed out loud several times while reading this book. I had read her first one about pregnancy so was excited to see there were more books in the series. This book really normalizes some of the feelings and thoughts new moms have. I passed this book onto a friend after I was done. This book not only focuses on baby but on mom as well.
I read this book 7 years ago when I had my daughter. I passed my copy along to some of my friends. Now, a family member is expecting her first child and I thought she could benefit from the advice and helpful tips the book contained. This book should be recommended anyone who just wants the truth, the honest, ugly, no hold barred, truth about the 1st year of a child's life.
