Nice Brando movie, directed by Sidney Lumet, co-starring Joanne Woodward and Anna Magnani. Film version of Tennesse Williams play Orpheus Descending. Of all the film adaptation of Williams' plays I would rate this below Strreetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but above Suddenly Last Summer and Sweet Bird of Youth. I think Brando was in top form and it kept my attention throughout. I had seen this film on tv a few times and I am glad to have a copy of my own.

This movie quite possibly epitomizes the loneliness of the human heart. I can't go too much into detail about the film because it will take away from the experience. But essentially the plot can be divided in two ways and the two seem to coalesce into one beautiful theme. First, there is Val, a man who drifts into a new town looking for work. With his "peculiar talk" and "temperature of a dog," and snake skin jacket, he is easily noticed by the townspeople. This is a man who essentially wants to live in solitude with his guitar (his life's companion) and leave behind the nightlife he's been into since he was fifteen. Then we have Lady. An older woman still coping with her past and still continuing to find these secrets. The wife of a mercantile store owner, she is taking care of the store while her husband is slowly dying of cancer. Their relationship is hostile at best. Val comes into the store looking for a job and Lady is at first hesitant of hiring because of his peculiar nature, but she decides to take a chance and hire him. And, to be quite honest, this is all I will tell because the rest must be unfolded for yourself. What I can say is that Val and Lady meeting happened for the best, and ultimately, seemingly the worst. This movie is highly underrated. The performances are amazing. Anna Magnani is fiery yet desperate. Marlon Brando underplays his character's role to show the character's disgust with the crowd he's been with. Joanne Woodward creates a playful and damaged character, a childlike girl who attempts to play with the ice cold exterior of Val's heart. There are lines in this film (as well as the play) that refuse to be forgotten. Val's speech to Lady about how no one will ever get to know anybody and how we're sentenced to solitary confinement for our whole lives. Lady speaking to a former lover and yelling passionately, "You sold yourself, I sold myself! You was bought, I was bought!" It's just painfully beautiful.Read full review
This movie in my opinion is one of Brando's greatest performances. The film features 2 great actresses in Anna Magnani & Joanne Woodward. Victor Joey plays the part of Magnani's dying husband as well as the villain in this deep south drama. Also featured is R.G. Armstrong as the redneck sheriff who works in concert with Jory in bringing this story to it's tragic conclusion.

When is ran at the local drive-in, back in the early 1960s, we went to see it with another couple. The drive-in speakers were poor quality and the couple in the rear seat started arguing and complained that they couldn't understand Brando (he had a reputation for mumbling). For years I wanted to see the complete film. It turned out that he spoke quite clearly. The acting was good on the part of several of the cast, including Victor Jory. Anna Magnani, whom many counted as ugly, is surprisingly attractive when you see her in action. The storytelling had the stifled tone of that era, yet the emotions and realities become clear. Based on the Tennessee William's play Orpheus Descending. Directed by Sidney Lumet in B/W with Marlon Brando, Anna Magnani, Victor Jory, Joanne Woodward. 1959.Read full review
MIRIAM HOPKINS PERFORMED THE STARRING ROLE ON LIVE STAGE, IN WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL TITLE OF THIS MOVIE, BATTLE OF ANGELS IN 1941. THIS WAS THE FIRST PUBLICLY PRODUCED PLAY (IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS) BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS. THIS FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION DID NOT MEET WITH ANY SUCCESS, AND WAS PLAGUED WITH PROBLEMS, ESPECIALLY THE FIRE SCENE AT THE END, THE THEATER ACTUALLY CAUGHT FIRE, AND THE AUDIENCE HAD TO FLEE FROM THE THEATER. LUCKILY, SUCH IS NOT THE CASE WITH MOVIES, AS THE SCENE CAN BE RESHOT IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS! THAT FIRST NIGHT'S PERFORMANCE IN BOSTON MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE A SPECTACLE! THE PLAY WAS LATER RETITLED ORPHEUS DESCENDING FOR THE 1950'S REVIVAL OF THE PLAY, AND FINALLY GIVEN THE TITLE, THE FUGITIVE KIND, FOR COMMERCIAL REASONS WHEN THE FILM VERSION WAS RELEASED IN 1960. MIRIAM HOPKINS WAS CONSIDERED BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS ONE OF THE FINEST ACTRESSES AMERICA EVER PRODUCED. TENNESSEE WILLIAMS WROTE THIS IN THE OFFICIAL OBITUARY THAT WAS RELEASED AT THE TIME OF MIRIAM HOPKINS DEATH IN THE EARLY 1970'S. SHE WAS A GOOD FRIEND OF MR. WILLIAMS, AND WELCOMED THE CHANCE TO STAR IN HIS FIRST PRODUCED PLAY. THIS EARLY WORK OF MR. WILLIAMS, LED TO HIS LATER FAME WITH THE GLASS MENAGERIE AND A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE TO ONLY NAME A FEW. LATER, IN 1959 WHEN THE PLAY WAS MADE INTO A MOVIE AND RELEASED IN 1960, ANNA MAGNANI MET THE CHALLANGE EQUALLY WELL, AS HAD BEEN THE CASE WITH MIRIAM HOPKINS IN THE ORIGINAL STAGE VERSION 19 YEARS EARLIER. THE STORY IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING EVER WRITTEN BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY ONE OF THE LEAST KNOWN TO THE MOVIE GOING PUBLIC. THE STORY DEALS WITH LONELINESS AND FEELING SEPARATE FROM THE WORLD AROUND US. ODDLY, THIS IS THE ONLY PLAY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS ACTUALLY DEALS WITH GOTHIC SOUTHERN RACISM IN ANY OF HIS WORKS. IF YOU LIKE THE WORKS OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, WHO WAS REFERRED TO AS THE POET OF THE EMOTIONS, AND HAVE NOT SEEN THIS FILM, YOU WILL INDEED EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF HIS GENRE AND THE GOTHIC SOUTHERN STYLE OF WRITING. REVIEWERS OF THIS FILM ALWAYS MENTION THE MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCES OF BRANDO, MAGNANI, JOANNE WOODWARD AND MAUREEN STAPLETON, AND ARE CORRECT IN DOING SO, BUT THE ROLE PLAYED BY VICTOR JORY AS THE AILING HUSBAND OF MAGNANI WILL LONG REMAIN IN YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS, POSSIBLY MORE SO THAN THE PRINCIPLE PLAYERS. THE NATURE OF EVIL THAT CAN DWELL IN THE HUMAN PSYCHE, HAS RARELY BEEN PERFORMED SO CONVINCINGLY AS VICTOR JORY'S PERFORMANCE IN THIS FILM. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING FOR THOSE WHO CAN APPRECIATE THE THE HARSHER REALITIES OF LIFE. THIS DVD IS A VERY CLEAR PRINT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY LACKS ANY COMMENTARY, TRAILERS OR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. A SHAME, AS MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED ON THIS FILM WERE ALIVE PRIOR TO THE DVD RELEASE, INCLUDING DIRECTOR SIDNEY LUMET, WHO DIED JUST RECENTLY. HOPEFULLY SOME FOOTAGE EXISTS FROM ANY NUMBER OF PEOPLE REGARDING THE MAKING OF THIS FILM, AND CAN BE ATTACHED TO POSSIBLE FUTURE RELEASES OF THIS MOVIE IN A MORE COMPREHENSIVE DVD RELEASE. A TRUE SOUTHERN GOTHIC CLASSIC THAT CAN ONLY COME FROM THE PEN OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS.Read full review
