With no preconceptions, I found this book to be a fascinating read and completed it in a very short time. The author did a great job describing these forgotten people and their reasons for migrating to the Soviet Union in the 1930's. He made their stories come alive. Beyond that the book did an outstanding job covering world events and what was going on inside the U.S. government as these people's lives began to descend into the chaos of the Communist system. He covered specific stories while simultaneously showing how national politics back home and international events affected their inability to escape their situations. It is well written and easy to read. Well researched, you will learn a lot of interesting history as well as finding the personal lives of some of these victims fascinating. I highly recommend it.Read full review
A great buy for a book that is hard to find in local libraries. Features shocking truths prior to WWII about how the USSR exploited people and nations for its own greed in eliminating millions of human beings while manipulating allies in providing valuable material and supplies under the guise of being an ally. Shocking revelations about how the U.S. government ignored the truths that were coming out of the USSR. Also shows the shrewdness of the political process in achieving its own self-fulfilling aims.

I was not aware of this sad episode of our American history. This book was mentioned in another book I was reading on the Great Depression and the beginning of WW2. I checked on it and immediately had to find a copy. The lure of a communistic way of life was compelling to many Americans dealing with the Depression. And, so, the stage was set for boatloads of Americans to emigrate to Russia under Stalin’s 5 year plan. Most found that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Many of the emigrants paid the ultimate price. A riveting read. Highly recommend.

I have the attitude that if you want to leave this wonderful Country, the USA (as some Hollywood types are threatening right now!), then good riddance, -----but it sure seems our embassy and our government should have done much more to help these stranded U.S. citizens, especially the military and others there on orders.

I read a wonderful review on this book before reading it where the reviewer compares and contrasts the Joad's from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, who migrated to California to escape the Great Depression, to the other Joads, ordinary Americans who went all the way east to the Soviet Union in search of their salvation and a socialist utopia. What they met instead was slavery and death. This is a tragic story of how Americans were betrayed by our own government, betrayed by the talking heads and the media of the day who convinced them to go, and betrayed by the Soviet Union, who abused, enslaved, and murdered them. There are thousands of stories in literature, movies and documentaries, about Hitler and the Nazis, but barely anything about the abuses of the Communist party and how they murdered over 100 million people. This is a story about a hundred thousand of their victims, who just happened to be American. Why no one has made this compelling story into a movie is beyond me, as this is a story that needs to be told.Read full review
