The ONLY reason to see this film is for two martial arts pros together for the first time - Jet Li and Jackie Chan! Excellent wire work, sets, and CGI effects. The young male lead detracts from the story as he reacts rather than acts and lacks the charisma of lets say - a Ralph Macchio of Karate Kid. The rest of the cast puts in competent performances. Good for one or two watchings!
This movie will be enjoyed by any Jet Li or Jackie Chan fans, certainly. The cinematography is wonderful, with stunning views, excellent use of CGI without overdoing it, and decent acting. Jet Li plays his role marvelously, and the continuity of the various plot themes is fantastic. There are subtleties to this movie that will require multiple viewings to catch! Pros include the acting and scenery, and the way language is dealt with. The only con is that the viewing I attended was a bit rough around the edges, with a couple of minor bobbles in editing and film quality. I'm sure this will be corrected in the final production for the theaters, though! Overall, this is a good action/fantasy movie. For those who like the "chop suey" kung fu flicks, this will be a blast from the past. Jackie Chan shows off his unique style of martial arts, while keeping the laughs rolling. Jet Li is NOT playing the 'baddie' for a change, and has a surprisingly entertaining role in this film. There isn't a lot of wire work in this film, and what is done on wires is done judiciously.Read full review
Normally I am not a big martial arts fan, but after alot of bugging out of our best friend we sat down to watch this flick..surprisingly enough we enjoyed this movie a great deal..film begins with a young Man out on his own struggling to survive against bullies pretty girls and work..the yong man is a martial arts buff and enjoys a good movie..he happens inside a old curio shop owned by an elderly Chinese man who claims to be over 100 yrs old there he's told a legend about a old staff he leaves the shop and heads home..circumstances lead the boy to help a band of thugs to rob the old man and when he's shot the boy races away clutching the staff..as they surround him the staff whisks him away where he meets up with a strange chinese man who claims to be immortal..together they set out to right a horrible wrong and bring down a legendary bad guy..This movie is filled with action, romance, suspense and just the right mix of comedy..viewers will be thrilled with this fun movie..I give this 5 out of 5 bars!Read full review
I usually don't like martial arts movies but after my boyfriend talked me into watching this movie, I loved it! Its a great movie about a teenager who is interested in kung fu and old chinese stories. While at an old kung fu movie store, the boy learns of a story that the owner is 100 years old and is protecting a magical staff. When the store is broken into, the old store owner tells the boy to take the staff and return it to the owner. Little did the boy know that the quest would lead him on a magical adventure that he will remember forever. The adventure also helps him learn things about himself that he never knew! All in all its a great movie! Its funny and very entertaining!
**SPOILER FREE** This movie never got a lot of attention. It should. It's a comedy starring (like most kung fu movies) some white kid who's a loser. He is friends with an old Asian guy who runs a movie store, and is always getting kung fu movies from him. The old Asian guy sums up the whole essence of all kung fu movies when he dismissively points out that the kid wants to "kick [butt] and get the girl" Well, some neighborhood thugs make the kid help them rob the old man's store, and the old man and the kid both get hurt. But the old guy owns this magical staff (he has been waiting for its' owner a long time) and it transports the kid to another realm. Turns out that the staff is a legendary weapon of a legendary warrior from this realm, and the kid quickly enlists the help of DRUNKEN immortal JACKIE CHAN to help return the staff to the owner. (and hopefully get home in the process!) Pause . For those who have never seen The Legend of Drunken Master, it is highly recommended to watch before this movie. It makes this movie feel nostalgic. :):) So anyway not only is the evil emperor looking for this staff, but so is a monk, played by JET LI. And HE FIGHTS DRUNKEN IMMORTAL. Price of admission, covered in spades. The rest of this movie is very well played, with tons of humor, a bit of drama, and an ending that is just perfect and makes you think that a cheesy kung fu comedy could not be so well done! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 5 STARSRead full review
