This book is a very informative book on healthy food you can cook. Not only does it have great recipes but also explains all the nutritional values for each recipe. I have been cooking with Ellie's help (recipes) for about four weeks and I am learning how to be healthier. Step by step, day by day, I learn more about the food I prepare and eat. I have become more aware of how I prepare my meals. The hardest thing about following all the recipes is the content. Ellie suggest using fresh veggie in all the recipes. Living in the mid-West it is some times hard to find some of the items that a recipe may call for. Other than that, the food is wonderful and my husband and family love it as well. We all have learned meany things from eating healthier. I forgot to mention the best bonus of all. The food is low in calories, high in essential nutritional value, and very delicious to eat. I lost six pounds in the first two weeks after changing my diet. I bought the book to help educate myself on how to cook healthier. Ellie Krieger doesn't promise you'll lose pounds or inches if you use her recipes, but she does tell you that you will be eating much healthier! I watch her show on the Food Network and wasn't sure how her recipes would translate into a cookbook. I was pleasantly surprised that they translate beautifully and she will provide you with the things you need to develop a healthy attitude toward excellent food that has super taste! She uses all fresh ingredients and the portions are very reasonable. The book gives you an idea of what ingredients to keep in stock for those meals and also each recipe is full of nutritional info. The recipes I have made so far have been delicious and high on the taste scale, which can't be said for a lot of health foods. There is a Scrumptious Scramble that has eggs, tomatoes, onions, dill, etc, that is marvelous for breakfast or even lunch. One of our favorites is the Grilled Zucchini Roll-Ups with Herbs and Cheese. She also makes some of the best mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and meatloaf....without losing the taste! The Tuscan Roasted Chicken with Vegetables and Garlic Fries are something I plan on this week and I have already made her Triple Chocolate Cookies and you will not miss the fat! My neighbor made the Ricotta Cheesecake with Fresh Raspberries last week for a women's group and she said they loved it. Ellie's philosophy is not to mask food or over process it with fats and chemicals. With her cookbook you can eat great recipes without the guilt. Highly recommend!Read full review
This is a great book for anyone looking to make healthier meals. I love the fact that organic food is emphasized. Everything I've made so far has been fairly easy to do and nothing was very time consuming. The best part is the food actually tastes good unlike some of the other healthy cooking books I've tried in the past. Another strong point about this book is that it dosen't cost you a lot to buy the ingredients you need and it helps you create a pantry of things you'll use often. This book even helps you make a shopping list for what you need. You'll save money and time.One of favorite meals was the butternut squash mac and cheese. It's such a creative idea to put squash into mac and cheese and it tastes amazing! I love mac and cheese, so this is a great way to enjoy it and not feel guilty. It's got me thinking a whole new way. It goes beyond the usual cookbook and explains more things about nutrition and eating great food that is good for you too. Elle Krieger helps you with easy to use instructions and suggestions. Fresh Foods are the backbone of her recipes: lean meats, fish, low fat dairy, and healthy oils beans and nuts. Each recipe has Information about serving sizes, calories,fat and nutrition. I love this cookbook and I know you will too.
I've made almost all of the recipes in the book!!!! They are easy to make and just sooo delicious!!! My family loves it too, although they don't know how healthy they are! My 9 year old-picky eater is happy to eat dinner with us. I don't have to make special foods for him anymore. It's definitely a good buy. I'm planning on getting one for my sister for her birthday. And my mother has already asked for three of the recipes... I think I'll get one for her, too!
