The movie is a wonderful uplifting spiritual, as well as, love story. It centers around a young man, who reminisce his life, beginning with his life as a child, and remembering being raised by his single mom who had to fight her own temptations and struggles even in the church (of which she broke free from) to succeed in the world as a singer in order to take care of him. Before she passed away, she taught him to not let anyone hold him back from succeeding in the world and from getting its best. Now a man without money, and after losing his job, he returns to his hometown for an inheritance left by an aunt. The temptations continue for all, especially for those in the church of which he inherits being the choir conductor. The movie has a compassionate and victorious ending, with the young man gaining "the best" one (a childhood flame)in marriage, and the church winning a gospel competition. This is a movie to see and feel. It is spiritually uplifting, with songs for all age groups - including a rap song, and even one that my 92-year old aunt loves to hear over and over again, sung by The Blind Boys of Alabama (blind singing group of over 60 years) entitled: "Soldier." This is a movie to see if you want to laugh, cry, shout, sing praises and feel good about yourself and others.Read full review
A New York advertising executive who is about to land a big account, has his life shaken up when it becomes known that he has lied about having a college degree. After being fired, his life is further shaken by his debtors who had counted on paying after landing the account. Having to go on the run, he is called back to his southern town roots, when his great aunt dies. At the reading of the will, he learns he has been asked to assume the mantle of choir director of his great aunt's church and if he can get the choir in the Gospel Explosion in Atlanta, he will inherit stock worth $150,000. Unfortunately the choir leaves a lot to be desired and he has to start recruiting. Among others, he gets three prisoners to join. More importantly, he gets a "sinner" from one of the local night clubs to join. While initially scorned and resisted, nonetheless her voice wins everyone but the hardcore church busybody. A delightful, surprisingly fresh comedy. Cubba and Knowls are great in this movie. The movie was a very entertaining movie. It is fun to watch.Read full review
This was a cute movie, with great actors!!! Funny, charming and romantic I thought it also captured good moral content that was well combined with humor and zest. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves romantic, comedy....with a touch of music!!!
Great movie and great music. The acting from Cuba is a little too much but great date night movie. Beyonce is a little lackluster in this movie as well. This also has miss Rue McClanahan in one of her last roles.
Very good portrayal of a variety of church issues (esp. church exclusivity), personal values, and in particular, the value and meaning of worship & praise. Couple of questionable scenes though. Wasn't too thrilled over the baptism scene. Good portrayal of reality in churches today (churches baptizing anyone they can), even though the scene devalues the true meaning of submission through baptism. Overall a great movie. Highly recommended.
