Hutton is good but the real scene stealer here is PENN who plays the druggie totally of control that even the Russians refuse to deal with over time I give it 5 STARS for real life excellent plot and first rate acting on Penns part. Christopher Boyce a young All-American man whose job as a guard for sensitive documents shatters his faith in his country and leads him to a sometimes comic, sometimes chilling sideline as a spy for the Soviets, aided by his scruffy buddy, Daulton it can't last, though, and the consequences are tremendous for Boyce and his family. This movie is a true thriller/drama. There is no eye candy to speak of, but the story is so compelling and the acting so superb, you wouldn't want to miss it. Dark, disturbing, and outstanding.
This was an excellent film about a time in U.S. history when young people used the excuse of "being disillusioned the events of everyday society" to do the unthinkable, commit treason! A true story based on actual events of the 1977 espionage trials of Christopher Boyce and Daulton Lee, two middle-class boys who used that exact excuse to steal classified U.S. documents and sell them to agents of the Soviet Union. Boyce was an ex-seminary student who works for the CIA. He begins copying and stealing sensitive documents which he sells to the Soviets. His boyhood friend Daulton Lee, a cocaine addict is his partner. Their code names are "Falcon" and "Snowman". They are soon in way over their heads and are caught, tried and imprisoned. Many people who saw this film felt sorry for these guys. The truth is, when they crossed that line, they and "Hanoi Jane" both should have gotten what they truly deserved, "Regular or Extra Crispy"! As a CIA employee in charge of guarding top secret documents, all American Christopher Boyce (Timothy Hutton ) becomes disillusioned with his country and decides to make a deal with the Soviet Union. Boyce drags his childhood friend Daulton Lee (Sean Penn) into the arrangement, but the drug addicted Lee s reasons for committing espionage are only for money. This is a suspenseful, provocative and sometimes comical account of a true occurrance. Best for people that enjoy political drama (Breach, The Company, etc). Good for a nights entertainment for sure.
One of my all time 80's movie, penn starting out for good acting career and directing also. Almost timely: selling secrets to the russians!?
