Here we go. This collection will satisfy the needs of 2 widely different groups. If you are not a fan of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band (then why in the heck are you reading this, anyway?) no, seriously, this would be a great place to start. This is a clean, concise, coherent overview of one of the most astonishing and important musical careers to emerge from the psychedelic revolution, or whatever you want to call whatever it was that happened back then. Skimming approximately 3 of the best and more accessible songs from each album, this 2-CD set is a wonderful compilation of Beefheart and his music. [Rhino productions are consistently strong, in my opinion.] For the diehard fan, ah, there is a different motivation. Scattered throughout this collection are some of the best and most obscure rarities that only the most hardened fans would possess, such as 3 of the 4 single sides cut for A&M in 1965, the great "Hard Work Drivin Man" from the "Blue Collar" soundtrack, the unreleased "Little Scratch" and the stunning guitar instrumental "Light Reflected off the Oceands of the Moon" from the "Ice Cream" sessions. Perhaps you have all the regular albums and the massive "Grow Fins" box (which is spectacular and awesome) and you don't really need this. Otherwise, you have to buy the thing, it's just that simple.Read full review
The title says it all. Beefheart wrote some music that is not for everyone but I like it very much and this is a good anthology.
