Any who have read Dorothy Dunnett's incredible works, Lymond Chronicles and House of Niccolo books will cheer to at last be able to find meaning in all of her obscure foreign-language poems, songs, quotations and so on. Here they all are laid out for us in a nicely-indexed fashion. If you reread these books - and what fan does not? - there is great joy to be found in having not only the songs in medieval French translated, but the entire song presented and put into context. Drothy required help in going back to find all these references, but they were found and are presented for the rabid fan. What a wonderful aid to understanding boththe books and more of the historical venues from which they originated. I love this book, I bought it because I had long wanted to have a source for Dunnett's cryptic quotations and references to places of which I knew nothing. I would say that having this book saves one from annotating the actual books as one reads, however, how could one annotate the books without this reference? Wonderful!!!Read full review
I purchased the companion because I am not familiar with many of the terms, and none of the Latin or French quotes used in the books. I purchased both companions as I am just beginning to read the Niccolo series.
