It was a good film, a new story, lovely setting, well acted, but I didn't think it was monumental. Just good entertainment, satisfying but not overly impressive. Film of the year, I don't think so, just wasn't that gripping. But I liked it. Clooney is very much himself in this film, and those who love him will get their fill. The really interesting story lies between the daughter and her friend who's a boy. Finding out your [nearly] dead wife was cheating on you's been done. But the friendship, and goings on among the bit players are the real gems of this film. You wouldn't get to meet them without Clooney's character. So there it is, watch it, see what you think. I enjoyed it. Cheers and Blessings, Max Rainet. **If you found this information at all helpful, please take a moment to select the "yes" button below. Most of the second half of the movie was filmed on the island of Kauai where I live but that's not why I enjoyed the film. I thought the casting was great and the director did a fantastic job and brought out really great performances. The story was very realistic as there really are numerous island families descended from Hawaiian royalty and/or missionaries who have accumulated great wealth with the resulting family squabbles over money. In the scene overlooking the family property, it is hard to believe that such pristine land actually exists, but it in fact does. The property is actually called Kipu Kai and it is on the southeast coast of the island. The land is presently held by a trust established by a man who purchased the land from his uncle who was a descendant of a well known missionary family (Rice) and one day in the not too distant future the land will revert to the State of Hawaii as per the terms of the trust. But I digress. The one thing I didn't like about the movie was that the scenes in Hanalei were filmed during a period of crappy weather and I am guessing that the budget for the film did not include waiting around for the weather to improve. Maybe it was intentional as it gave a rather gloomy effect which matched George's increasing level of anxiety during these scenes. I am no expert film critic, so take this with a grain of salt. Hanalei Bay on a sunny summer day is beautiful beyond words. Finally, George Clooney's performance was so good, I actually gained a new respect for him and no longer think of him as just a handsome Hollywood star.Read full review
Saw this film in the movie theatre when it came out years ago and decided to buy the dvd for a cabin in the woods that doesn’t allow streaming but has electricity for DVD player. It’s a great story band it’s well acted. Scenery is wonderful as well as it was made in Hawaii.

The Descendants is a superb film with a dynamic cast. Throughout the movie, you wonder if Clooney's character is ever to catch a break. With his wife in a coma and on the frindge of death, Clooney's character has to deal with taking care of his youngest, sweet, but trouble making daughter, his oldest daughter who is a rebel without a cause and her boyfriend, along with trying to confront the man whom his wife was having an affair with; all while being involved in a very public business deal involving land which his family has owned for centuries. Should they sell or not sell? As trying as the journey is for Clooney and his family, it ultimately brings them closer than ever. Through the trying times, comedic relief is always there to keep it rolling.
Very interesting story and how the family managed the problems. Ken
