The British really know how to make documentaries. The "Walking With Dinosaurs" and "Walking With Prehistoric Beasts" five disk set is no exception. The two miniseries documentaries use computer generated imagery (CGI) to bring an entirely realistic view of animal life of over 200 million years ago to the near present. The style is familiar, the camera follows the dinosaurs exactly like a modern nature film follows contemporary wildlife (substituting a T Rex for a lion, or an Iguanadon for a Zebra). The five disk set include two "Making of..." documentaries with additional details on the paleontology behind the storylines. The documentaries are a series of self contained stories (even so far as to naming the main "characters"). The "Making of..." documentaries on the documentaries shows that the storylines were not made entirely from whole cloth. For example, the bones of the T Rex shows the scars and fractures from a very difficult life. The storyline of the Tyrannosaurus follows it's hatching from an egg to a somewhat premature ending from an accidental encounter. Each event in the storyline is linked to material evidence in the paleontological record. Some of it is obviously imaginative, but it is always plausible and presented in a style which keeps the viewers' interest. On the technical side, the "Walking With Dinosaurs" series was a milestone in itself for computer generated imagery of animals which have not walked the Earth for these many millions of years. The "Making of..." documentaries themselves are an eye opener on how computer graphics are made and the stunning degree of realism is achieved.Read full review
I bought this for my 5 and 7 year old sons since we have started homeschooling and are covering prehistory. They started watching the series on YouTube, but the ads were becoming a real issue so we gave them these DVDs as a birthday gift and they have loved them. I, however, was disappointed to discover that the "Complete Walking With Collection" did not include the Walking with Monsters episodes about life before dinosaurs. Admittedly, it was my own fault for not reading the fine print about what was and wasn't included; but, I would have much preferred to have that series included in this DVD set than many of the bonus discs about "the making of" the series. As it turns out, I was able to find that in a single disc form on Amazon, but, I still wish I had known before purchasing this set that Walking with Monsters was not included.Read full review

Delightful series. My son, who is very into paleontology, loves them. I only wish they were made a bit later and included "walking with monsters," which is his favorite.
