I'm a music lover as well as a fan of the occassional romantic comedy, so this one fired on all cylindars for me. Richard Dryfus plays Paul Dietrich, a concert pianist desperate for top billing, and persistent in entering competetions in his region in hopse of springboarding to success. He's getting older, though, and while his dad is his staunchest supporter, mom wants him to settle down and get a job, something Paul knows would make sense. But this is his last year of elligibility for "The Arrabella Gretch Hillman Memorial Piano Competetion", so instead of applying for a job as a substitute music teacher he throws caution to the winds and takes "one last shot at competing." Then he discovers an old flame's entered, too. Heidi Joan Schoonover (Amy Irving) is gorgeous, sheltered and open, approaching Paul on the steps to the concert hall and "eating into his concentration" as he remembers he used to call her "Joanie". As the international pomp and stresses of a major competetion assault them, Paul and Joanie find on-again, off-again comfort in each other's arms, teaching and learning from each other and growing into an uneasy intimacy stretched taught as piano wire by hyper-awareness of the elephant in the room: a half-hour performance they each must give which will make or break the rest of their lives. Unlike so many movies of this type, this one presents us with something which could actually happen, and never lets us relax, not even at the very end, when it's refreshingly unclear whether these two will manage to build a future together. A slice of life with awesome music and a brilliant suspense factor, that's what we're given here, along with an outstanding supporting role for Lee Remick as Heidi's ultra-protective teacher. GET THIS!! It's definitely worth your time.Read full review
I bought this movie video because, after seeing it many times, I felt that it should part of my favorite movie collection. I could not find it in a video store. I love this movie because of the subject matter. I LOVE the piano repetoire. I enjoyed watching the actors "play" the piano, even though I know they were not really playing. I like the story that surrounds the competition. Also, I enjoyed the performances of both Dreyfuss and Irving. Richard Dreyfuss happens to be my favorite actor. I thought Dreyfuss and Irving had great chemistry. I also enjoyed the character played by Joseph Cali, what I thought as the comic relief in the film. I also don't want to forget a fine performance given by Lee Remick, Amy Irving's piano teacher in the film. The only thing I disliked was the dialogue in a few places. Once in a while, there was a line that didn't work for me. Despite the line, Dreyfuss makes it believable because he is such a fine actor. Otherwise, there was so much more of this movie to enjoy and love than not to love.Read full review
This has been one of my favorite movies for years. I have nearly worn out my first copy, so I decided to grab a new one when it was available. The acting is outstanding, the characters are all true to their roles in a very believable setting. For the music alone it would be worth watching repeatedly.
The music was fantastic and the storyline was both exciting and heart warming. It is a love story and a story of teens growing up and learning to make hard choices and accepting the consequences. Irving and Dreyfuss both gave excellent performances as did Remeck. There is magic in this film. Please, please somebody do what has to be done to bring it to 5:1 digital DVD. PLEASE! It deserves to be re-mastered and preserved.
This is one of those films that did not make the jump from VHS to DVD. Richard Dreyfus is very good, but Amy Irving is outstanding. Also it is a real treat to watch both Lee Remick and Sam Wanamaker do what they did best. The piano playing is very realistic, kudos to whoever taught the actors. If there is a flaw, it is that there may be one breakup and reconciliation scene too many, but overall this is an enjoyable and well done piece of film-making. It would be a tragedy if this this was lost.
