Simon Singh is one of the best writers of science for the layman. He does a terrific job of making very tough subjects interesting and accessible without dumbing them down. This particular book starts with the creation of code and secret writing in the Greek and Roman times and moves through history at a pretty rapid clip to the present day. He spends a good deal of time on the creation and breaking of the Enigma cipher in WW2, and also focuses on why the RSA algorithm that is used in ecommerce today is so safe. To date, Simon has written 3 books. I own copies of all three and have given away other copies as gifts. This book, for instance, was for my mother who doesn't read non-fiction. Although she is only able to do it in small chunks at a time, she is enjoying the read.
