3 of my favorite actors and it's well worth watching. Slow at times but still good.

Academy Award winners Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger star in this very elaborate drama that has many story lines to follow. The movie begins in a small town in New Mexico where Gina (Kim Basinger) is living with her husband and four children. One of her children discover that Gina is having an affair and this leads to a tragic accident. From there the movie moves forward about 10 years where we follow the life of Sylvia (played by Charlize Theron). Sylvia is suffering from her past and has suicidal thoughts. This movie is very deep and it is full of sorrow, but it is also full of life. It is very well directed and both Theron and Bassinger give outstanding performances. The movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence.
"The Burning Plain" simmers slowly, transcending time and space, weaving back and forth chronologically to tell a tale of such pain and grief that it is truly heartbreaking to watch. The incredibly talented Charlize Theron plays Sylvia, a restaurant hostess somewhere in Oregon, who walks dazedly through life, exorcising her inner demons through casual, indiscriminate sex. There's a strange guy (Jose Maria Yazpik) who seems to be stalking her. Then in another strand, there's a discontented housewife (Kim Basinger) who is having an affair with a married man (Joaquim de Almeida). A tragedy ensues, lives are thrown off balance and viewers are left to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I love this method of storytelling (from the same guy who gave us Babel and Amores Perros) and putting things together step by step, though I did manage to 'solve' the dark mystery harbored by Charlize Theron early on in the story. The talented cast, including young actors J.D. Pardo and Jennifer Lawrence who play teenage lovers brought together as a result of the tragedy, deliver finely nuanced performances that elicit viewer's empathy. Nothing is black and white - what initially appear to be flawed and immoral characters are revealed to have surprising depth. This is a movie that slowly engages the viewer's attention and once it does, it takes full grip and never lets go till the final scene.Read full review
This film has Jennifer Lawrence in it and her acting is flat-out amazing. No wonder she has become a genuine superstar. There are several rather tragic aspects to the plot, but with a sign of hope at the end, which I liked. Some might find the nonlinear way the story is presented a little difficult. My only real complaint was that Ms. Lawrence was listed way down in the credits, where, in my humble opinion, she should have had at least equal billing with Kim Bassinger and Charlize Theron.
2 stories in one; intertwined. Filmed in Portland, OR & coast of Oregon. Also filmed in SW US.
