I have to disagree with the reviewers who think this is the scariest movie ever made. THE BREED qualifies for that honor only if you are really, really afraid of dogs. If wild dogs are your worst nightmare, I can see how this would be scarier than demons, ghosts, vampires, zombies, or a deranged human psycho killer. Otherwise, no. The dogs are kind of cute until they bite you, and even then, they tend to bite and run. No sex, not much blood...I would have rated this PG-13, not R, and there's nothing inappropriate for your kids if they like horror movies. I've seen more gore on an average episode of CSI. That said, it is still worth watching --- suspenseful, with good performances by the lead actors --- but not something I'd watch again and again. Although we are told the dogs are genetically engineered, any superpowers they may have are not evident. The girl who gets bitten near the beginning keeps saying she doesn't feel good, and I suspected she was going to morph into a dog, but she was killed before anything freaky happened. Another girl is INSIDE a building when she blows it up to kill the dogs inside. There is an explosion and the entire building bursts into flame, but the girl survives without a single burn. The two male protagonists have a disturbing tendency NOT to come to another person's rescue, or to do so ineffectually; one tries to shoot a dog with an arrow, and instead shoots a girl through her leg. What we are SUPPOSED to be seeing are super-strong, super-intelligent dogs. What I saw were dogs behaving like any feral dogs who are trapped on an island without food and are suddenly presented with a tasty dinner. Obviously it would not be pleasant to be eaten by a pack of wild dogs; but, to me, that's all this movie shows. No science fiction or supernatural horror, just vicious dogs.Read full review
I'm not afraid of dogs, but still thought it was a bit scary at times. I don't think you have to have a pre-existing fear of dogs to be afraid of these dogs! And it's not just the dogs- it's the plot that is scary. It could be wild gophers or rabid squirrels, and the plot would still work! Anyway, sometimes you have to just try not to analyze or read into a movie, but just enjoy it for what it's worth. This movie, it's Wes Craven, and just for that alone it deserves respect! I myself really loved watching it and will definitely watch it again.
Not a masterpiece like Jaws but not a "dog" either (sorry). Hard to get and had no problem making my wife scream without grossing her out.

This movie is not particularly good but the idea that they had like 30 trained dogs for this movie is very cool. Its worth a watch just to see the stunts and/or dogs.
