This is another wonderful fictionalized historical account of the time of King Henry VIII of England, and shortly thereafter. Ms. Gregory is a master storyteller and has obviously done hours of research on this time period. The characters in this book, just like in all her others, just come alive under her pen. I have read much on 16th century England, but nothing like this--you almost feel as though you are there. I love the detail about court life as well as the everyday lives of the commoners. I also found it horrifying in it's description of the executions of heretics, and plotters against the throne. This book, as well as all her others, really made me stop and think about the religious freedoms that we all take for granted today, and what that actually means. I loved this book!
I love to read about this era in history..quick easy reading told by three characters;Anne of Cleaves,Kathrine Howard and Jane Boleyn.Phiipppa Gregory has found a new twist to an old story.Perhaps if the movie "The Other Boleyn Girl"is a smashing hit;this will be the sequel..I intend to read the rest of this authors books on the Tudors series.I cannot wait to see the movie "The Other Boleyn Girl".It has a great cast and the previews look great.
I absolutely loved this book...I was hesitant after reading "The Virgin's Lover" but this was a very good read. The book is told in 3 perspectives that keeps it moving and interesting. All three ladies are very colorful and Philippa did a great job of bringing them to life. You love Jane, you hate Jane. You see Katherine as a naive girl who was too young and vain to see the consequences of her actions. Anne is extraordinary..even though you know the out come you always have dread and hope for the players in this book. I couldn't help empathising with these ladies and asking myself what would I have done in that situation.
Excellent writer .... this book has compelled me to purchase several other of her books. Always interesting and hard to put down.

Once again Gregory has written an masterful novel. Told from three different prospectives, it enthralled me as I journeyed through the court of Henry VIII. The history is well researched and the characters are believeable and, I believe, true to what the true persons would have behaved, thought and felt. Excellent Book, easy to read and follow.
