This is an above-average film noir released in 1953. Anne Baxter is sympathetic and likable as Nora, who goes to a blind date's apartment but flees in panic, leaving her shoes behind, when he tries to rape her. She is so drunk at the time that all she remembers the next day is fighting off the guy. But how much force did she use? The newspaper's front-page story is that the man was found dead in his apartment and that the woman who left her shoes behind must be the killer. Modern viewers may wonder why Nora, a woman with a respectable job and no police record, doesn't tell the truth immediately. Keep in mind that while a lawyer might successfully argue self-defense in 2016, opinions were very different in 1953. Simply going to a man's apartment on a first date would have been judged a sign of low morals, and being drunk wasn't an extenuating circumstance, it was more "proof" that a woman was bad to the bone. Confessing would have meant an automatic conviction and the attempted rape was irrelevant because Nora was "asking for it." There was never a dull moment in this film and I couldn't figure out if, or how, Nora would get out of her predicament.Read full review

Inspired by the infamous "Black Dahlia" murder. Has little to do with the case because that was the 40's. This is set in noir '50s and has great imagery. Anne Baxter is wonderful in this and seeing old Los Angeles will make you a fan of this film! Or perhaps you like Nat King Cole? He shows up and is convincing in this old noir movie. So turn out the lights, sit down and wath this film and eat some ice cream!
This 1953 film noir stars Anne Baxter, Richard Conte, Ann Southern, Raymond Burr, George Reeves(Superman fame). The film has a 1940's feel to it, as a star reporter (Conte) tries to help Baxter who is accused of killing Burr, in exchange for her exclusive story. This is an engaging murder caper with lots of twist and turns. Very well done. Nat King Cole has a cameo.
