After reading several glowing reviews of this book, and not receiving it for Christmas or my birthday, I purchased it myself. As a person who has read a hundred books on the Beatles this is undoubtably the best. It delves deep into the history of each member, from family trees to youth friendships to school, first instruments, first bands and the seemingly unending quest for fame and success. It is not another book full of fluff. The few errors in the book indicate to me that the author is not a big Beatles fan {there are eleven songs not ten on the "Yesterday and Today" album none of which were "Paperback Writer" or "Rain"}. But his research is incredible, from the tours in Hamburg, the Tours in America and Asia. If there is one event in the book that caught my attention {and there were many}, it's that I never knew how close the Beatles were to being rejected by Parlophone and George Martin. The Beatles were being recorded while Martin was busy in his office. The recording engineer was not at all impressed and after playing the tape for Martin his opinion was the same. For an hour and a half he critiqued the group on everything they did wrong and everything he didn't like. When he was finished he asked them if there was anything that they didn't like. George Harrison responded "well, for starters, I don't like your tie." This broke the ice with the rest of the band kidding, joking and carrying on. After the banter was over, Martin actually liked their personalities and decided to record them. As they say "The rest is History". But no history of the Beatles comes anywhere close to this book. You will not be dissappointed!Read full review
I have read just about every other Beatles Bio and this one is good, well he has taken the content out of every other Bio out there. A couple of things got me going - mistakes. He says George met Patti on the set of Help, wrong, it was hard Days Night. He also said that the Beatles ND FREINDS used to enjoy "ChickButties" back in Liverpool and they were chicken in buttered bread...wrong. They are "ChipButties", that's french fires to Americans...what Liverpool working class family could afford to feed hoards of hungry teenagers chicken? Overall it's OK, but annoying because of the inaccuracies.
The jacket notes refer to this book as a "page turner", and is it ever ! I've generally been intimidated by books of this lenght (850+ pages) but I stumbled across a guest copy while vacationing and read the first 100 pages virtually before I could put it down, so I bought a used copy at Half.com. What a wonderfully written, engaging read ! I was never a huge Beatles fan (at least not post-Beatlemania), but to have the entire compelling, improbable and often tragic saga replayed so skillfully by Mr. Spitz, it's rekindled a new interest in their entire repertoire - amazing how many songs (words and melody) come back to mind as you catch references to them in the text. My next Half.com purchase will be the complete Beatles compendium !
Rich in detail and reads like a novel. Whether all the information is authentic is difficult to tell because there is much new material here, especially about the boys' formative years. It is a sympathetic but objective tale, not gushy or fan magazine shallow. I believe I get a sense of who these amazing guys were when I was a teen. The revelation is that they seem nothing like their media image at the time. We build up Rock Gods but Spitz tells a story of a talented and imaginative garage cover band that became the biggest act in show business. The characters are believable and accessible, like the kids down the block. I have read many books on the Beatles, both in group and individual biography. This book is a definitive account of the people that were the Beatles and the world they inhabited day to day. If you are even a bit curious about them, read this book.Read full review
