This is another good book by John Grisham involving lawyers, good and bad. His writing style is very realistic and his stories are intriging and does tow things for me: makes me understand the legal profession much better and appreciate the good, honest lawyers out there; and makes me realize how crooked and dishonest many other lawyers can be (as in any profession, there and good and bad representatives); especially in the political arena and those huge, big money lawyer firms. Though these are novels, it helps me understand what can go on in class action lawsuits and the difference between the starving lawyers (the honest ones) and the big money boys (and girls) - it shows why the large majority of politicians are lawyers (Hillary Clinton would be an perfect antagonist in one of Grisham's books). His earlier books I think were better to much better, but this book is worth reading. I have all his books and will continue to purchase any future ones he may write. I highly recommend his earlier books as like I said, as they were somewhat better than his latest one. But I would also recommend this book too.Read full review
This was not a bad story, but I found it long. It took me more than 1 try to complete it. Krane Chemical had a manufacturing plant in Bowmore, Mississippi; a rural area. Bowmore has the largest cancer rate in the country, due to the illegal dumping from the Krane plant. Wes and Mary Grace Payton successfully sued Krane for their client, Jeannette Baker whose son and husband have died from cancer. In the process, they lost almost everything and the care may bankrupt them. But, Krane Chemical will not take this sitting down and proceeds to find a candidate to run against a Mississippi Supreme Court Judge. With above board and not above board money they make sure their person wins. With the understanding that he is against liability cases. The story starts with everyone waiting in the verdict all the way to the Supreme Court ruling.Read full review
O.K. I waited and waited til it was MY TURN to get THE APPEAL from our Libray. ( hint: I asked for in LARGE PRINT... Not that many people ask for books in Large Print, so you get it faster. ) I read the book in about 5 days. It was good. The beginning... Good... The you can actually learned how Big Business & Govt. work hand in hand so they get what they want. It's scary how do they do that. But to be truthful, I would have given the book a different ending. I don't want to say what it was or I'll give the whole thing away. BUt then you may like the emding just the way Grisham wrote it. My favorite characters of course was the female lawyer who represented Jeanette. She must be a spitfire in the court room. I would love for this book to become a movie! It's a good read no mater what. :-) SusanRead full review
John Grisham is my favorite author in fiction as well as super in his offering of true events. I have all his books, plus most of them on tape or CD, his movie and all the movies made from his books. He keeps me turning pages anxious to find what his characters will do. His presentation of facts and court proceedings are exciting but within reason, not the vivid imagination of many writers in his field. 30 years in law enforcement plus almost 10 more in security earned me many, many hours in courtrooms, criminal and civil. His presentations of cases A to Z are so "actual fact" that it is easy to forget you are reading fiction. THE APPEAL is a bit different but brings back memories of election tactics used during my 55 years of voting. It is very much a good read with much more fact than fiction. My second reading was better than the first.Read full review
John Grisham is my favorite author. I have been a fan of his writing since the first novel I read of his, “The Partner.” While “The Partner” remains as my favorite Grisham novel, “The Appeal” is definitely high on my list. This book is a classic story of good vs. evil. I was desperately hoping that good would conquer all. I couldn’t wait to finish it and find out which side won. There were a few twists and turns, so it kept me guessing. After reading this book, I must say that I look at politics and the judicial system in a slightly different light. As Grisham reiterated in his author’s note, “The Appeal” is a work of fiction. However, there is some truth to this story. I found that truth to be rather enlightening. This book, unlike other Grisham novels, stirred emotions in me. I took this book on vacation and it proved to be a wonderful traveling companion. I would recommend it. It is available to purchase in my store.Read full review
