I'm a History prof, so, when I show clips in class, I want to zoom in on exactly what I need, so I don't distract the students. I prefer having VHS tapes b/c I can do just that; DVD scenes take more time & forwarding. So, when I can get a tape that is in great condition, it makes my teaching much smoother. I use this movie in U.S. History 2 classes, in discussions about how other countries find reasons to dislike the U.S. The "Americanization" is about cultural imperialism. Many nations dislike the U.S.' culture. But, the U.s.--Geroge Washington, in particular--is supposed to be a different animal, forgetting the European factionalism & being "American." This is also part of the "isolationism" practiced by the U.S. (or attempted practice). James Garner's character has 2 monologues about this very issue--and they are great discussion-starters. This movie has a lot of relevance still today.Read full review
The Americanization of Emily is a good movie for those who like war films. It is basically a romance story with comedy too buy does re-enact the allies landing at Normandy Beach. I liked it a lot.
