This is a classic Hitchcock masterpiece definitely, and this I believe is the best release for it, but that's not saying much. Audiovisual quality is a bit better than the previous DVD release but there's still obviously lots of room for restoration. A 4K master would be an improvement overall but the problem is this film apparently was produced using soft focus lenses which limits what one can do. There are still many obvious scratches, grain and foreign matter visible here in this master unfortunately. This is a great film all considered, beautiful production. I don't regret buying it, just looking forward to something better. šµš»āāļø

The criterion version has excellent sound and restored picture quality. Better than ever on blu-ray. Excellent thriller. Put in perspective of go-all-the-way Brit determination of era (Historically I mean, civilians had bombs in their living rooms, and took it upon themselves to take their personal boats and go forth to engage the enemy, uncertain if they would return to their villages) as well as isolated areas where people were accustomed to walking as a way of life.....One needs to understand history to understand that this story is not so far fetched as some would say. For a mature, cultured film lover perhaps, but remains always an excellent, not canned, foray into film and why Hitchcock films endure. I LOVE this film.

The screen image is smaller than standard DVDs and widescreen images. The sound does go high enough to hear everything said easily. The plot is silly, and in addition, there is little to no suspense.

About what you could expect for a "spy thriller" made this long ago. Poorly written with lots of gaps in the story. Donat walking the miles of the Highlands of Scotland on foot.. . . showing up at all the right places. At one point, the "bad guy" wants to keep his ill doing from his wife, and later on she is part of the cover up, etc. I would have expected more from Hitchcock. His "spy" movie Saboteur was much better.
I love this movie, and to have the Criterion Collection version, with its crisp picture, extras and booklet by one of my favorite film writers is fantastic.
