I was going to replace my 15 year old 4D Mag-Lite with a newer LED type flashlight, but since it's always been so reliable, I decided to upgrade it instead. This TerraLUX TLE--6EX-CNC dropped right in to replace the original incandescent bulb the flashlight came with. No modification was required. Since this LED bulb is rated for up to 6 C or D cells at 1.5V each (for a total of 9.0V), I also replaced the 4 D batteries and retrofitted the flashlight to accept 2 18650 Li-Ion batteries. This provides 7.2 - 8.4V instead of the 6.0V (or less) the 4 D cells provided. Now My Mag-lite is lighter and brighter. No need to replace it now.

To be fair, it IS much brighter than a stock or halogen bulb. But the position of the LED chip relative to the reflector makes it hard to adjust it to anything other than a tight, focused beam. If you want a broad flood light pattern, it will leave a dark spot in the center. And compared to today's LED chips, it falls short in total light output. Many inexpensive flashlight alternatives are available that will outshine this bulb when installed in a Maglite. But if you just have to keep your old Maglite around for sentimental reasons, this bulb is an improvement.

I am blown away at how bright this LED bulb is. It's like night and day versus the old incandescent bulb. I strongly recommend making the switch it's well worth it.
