This is a rather charming movie about the little people named the Clocks who lived under the floor of Aunt Sophy's victorian house and their adventures to stay out of harm's way. We are introduced to the old aunt going up the stairways (ala Psycho-like but not scary here) and find here singing away with the old victrola playing some English tune while sipping her Mideira wine. Things come to a head with the arrival of the great-nephew of the old aunt (played to perfection by Dame Judith Anderson no less). Pod played by the incomparable Eddie Albert of Green Acres fame is delightful as is his wife and daughter. Pod carries on cute conversations with the old aunt on a little table nearby her bed and takes his daughter Arriety out on "borrowing" expeditions, etc. Eventually Pod gets "seen" by the "human Boy"! as does Arriety when she investigates the playhouse in the boy's bedroom. Having just read the book, and there are 4 sequels to the series all by Mary Norton and originally published in England, I have discovered several liberties taken by the movie as that is often the case anyway. Somehow Mrs. Driver has become Mrs. Crampfurl in the movie whereas I believe Crampfurl is the man in the story (whether husband or not the reviewer doesn't remember). The illustrations in the book are very nice with the movie picking up on many of the scenery descriptions. The reviewer felt the movie's Arriety is more polyanna-like whereas the book's portrayal of the girl is more of a sad nature matching that of the mother's. All in all a nice movie with some nice music to set the tone very well. It is amazing how the little people are portrayed against the carpet on the stairs and their moving about among all the giant objects to them. The reviewer liked this DVD very much as well as the book. davosales 10/17/07Read full review

This is a movie I haven't seen since I was a child. I wanted to rent it for my daughter but the video rental store only had the new version. I was happy this seller had what I wanted and my daughter loved it. Thanks! The quality wasn't perfect some scenes were very bright - - but keep in mind this is a movie from the 70's.
