Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) is an old Marshall who always gets his man. Most of the time dead! This has him afoul of the judge who thinks that Rooster is just getting lazy. He's one hell of a sight with an eye patch, and a big belly. One day while out on the trail of a gang of thieves he comes across a settlement where an old preacher and several Indians who lived there were murdered. Miss Eula Goodnight (Katherine Hepburn), the old spinster daughter of the preacher teams up with Cogburn to track them down. Rooster tries his best to get rid of her, but the strong-minded old Bible-thumping missionary will have none of it. Constantly exchanging barbs the two continue to chase the gang responsible. They had a wagon stolen from the Army with munitions. They were going to rob a bank but Rooster and Miss Eula took the explosives. At a river crossing, they commandeer a raft and start downstream with a load of nitro and a Gatling Gun. The finish is exiting and sure to please.Read full review

A follow up movie to True Grit, this western is full of what a great John Wayne western has to have: colorful dialog, good characters, shoot-outs, plenty of horses and beautiful panoramas. This may not be one of the most popular John Wayne movies, but it is certainly worth adding to your collection. I have had it in my collection for many years now. Hepburn gives a terrific performance, as does Wayne, and the story, while simple, keeps the viewer interested the whole way through. I am replacing my VHS copy with DVD, as I have worn the poor thing out!!
John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn have always been my favorites and paired together in this movie well, it just doesn't get any better than this. It shows two separate people can become a pair and stand beside each other through all their differences. I would give this movie a 5. I wish the numbers went higher......
