I just purchased, at age 64, my 3 third physical hard copy of "Something/Anything". First time, it was on 8-Track, when I was in 8th grade, 1972 or '3. Then, in the 1980's, I replaced the 8-Track with a Vinyl set. Now, after losing my ability for vinyl listening some 15 years, I purchased a CD copy, courtesy of Kat and Kompany at Captain-Video, here on Ebay (whom I wholeheartedly recommend)! I have ALWAYS loved Todd...his earlier material especially.

After a short, successful stint with the Philly blues-rock band Nazz in the late '60s, Todd Rundgren began a stint with Ampex/Bearsville frontman Albert Grossman behind the controls as a producer and engineer for acts that Grossman was promoting, like Jesse Winchester, The Band, and Ian & Sylvia. Todd was given the chance to create his own work, and when his first solo album produced a hit in 'We Gotta Get You A Woman,' Rundgren was on his way to becoming a bonafide contributer to the label. Something/Anything? solidified that ranking. For a young artist to get a record deal isn't easy, but when that artist was as accomplished as Todd Rundgren was at an early age (he was still just 24 when this album, his third, was released) it's easy to see that Grossman knew he had a potential hit songwriter and viable rock act, as well as a quality producer. Something/Anything quickly rose up the charts, thanks to single success of tracks like 'I Saw The Light,' 'Wolfman Jack' and the mega-hit 'Hello It's Me' which peaked at #5. Made more amazing is that Todd Rundgren played all the instruments and sang all the vocals on three of the four original LP sides, and enlisted the help of such session experts as Rick Derringer, David Sanborn and Mark Klingman to help out on side four. As a substantial reward, Rundgren received critical praise for this album, earning a five-star rating from Rolling Stone magazine. If you're looking for classic gold from a period when the LP was king, but without the snap, crackle and pop of vinyl, this is an excellent CD from one of the most substantial artists of the '70s - though you may be surprised to find that Rundgren is still making music and touring, most recently releasing his album 'Arena' in 2008. Some artists keep producing quality music even after 40 years in the business, and Rundgren's catalog is chock full of quality albums, even if they didn't achieve the commercial success of Something/Anything?. I rated this album Excellent because of the excellent quality of the songwriting, the nice job Rhino did on the remaster, and the way this album has stood the test of time. If you're only looking for greatest hits, try Rhino's The Very Best Of Todd Rundgren instead.Read full review
