I've reviewed the other two "From The Vault" releases, and gave them both 5 stars. This one also sounds fantastic, great mix, and the mastering is superb. To my ears, this is definitely the clearest sounding of the three Vault releases. This two CD set captures the band in a transitional phase, drummer Mickey Hart left after the previous nights performance (for 3 & 1/2 years). Carrying on as a five piece, they developed a tighter, more straight forward rock sound. This CD documents this period wonderfully, it was recorded at The Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY on February 19th 1971. They debuted many new songs the night before, and play the first ever "Bird Song", and "Deal" on this recording. I would recommend any of the three "From The Vault" CDs for the serious Grateful Dead fan. For the less familiar, I would recommend either "One From The Vault", or this CD (Three From The Vault).Read full review
Recorded February 19, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, this 20-song performance has traveled a long road to release. Representing the pinnacle of the band's renowned archive of 2,400 live show recordings, the groundbreaking From The Vault series' rare multi-track recordings thrilled hardcore fans and novices alike before stalling in 1992 after only two volumes. An original Betty Board. Mixed by Grateful Dead soundman Dan Healy and ready for release back in 1993, Three from the Vault sat on the shelf for a decade and a half. Perhaps, most significantly, this was the first show of the turn-on-a-dime Dead-era without drummer Mickey Hart. The absence of Hart leaves Bill Kreutzmann plenty of room to create lean, taut rhythms and Pigpen McKernan's usually downplayed organ is cranked, offering a refreshing third voice against Jerry Garcia's and Bob Weir's guitars. Heard here are the second-ever performances of “Loser”, “Bertha”, “Playing In The Band”, “Greatest Story Ever Told” and “Wharf Rat”, plus the world premieres of “Bird Song” and “Deal.” All of which would go on to become beloved staples of the live repertoire for the rest of the bands touring life. These moments just scratch the surface, as all the performances are stellar. There is a rare crispness and energy to the Dead's attack here. When the non-believers wonder why the 'heads love this band, THREE FROM THE VAULT should be the one of the first responses. TRACK LIST: 1. Two Ditties 2. Truckin' 3. Loser 4. Cumberland Blues 5. Glad to finally nail down a copy of 3 From The Vault! I have been eyeing it for years, and have steadily watched it go up in price. I had all but given up on buying one, and just being satisfied with my tapes and cd recordings of this show, when one came up for sale at a buy it immediately price that benefited charity as well! Another bucket list recording acquired!

great set of tunes. This set features a whole lot of favorites being played for the first time. Although the songs became better and better the more they were played, it was nice to hear them in the their rawest form. And OH PIGPEN, these songs where remastered yet he seems to be a bit capitalized on. You can definitely hear him feelin' the music. Its beautiful. I'm Grateful for The Dead. 3whitneymarie
