PLOT: Security Expert Abigail now is her OWN best protection from her secret past. TEENAGE Genius Elizabeth MAKES HER OWN FAKE ID~ and goes clubbing with her friend. AND becomes a witness to a Russian Mob Hit is on the run. 12 years later~ Abigail is a recluse in the Ozarks and *attracts* the attention of of the local law BROOKS GLEASON when he spots her gun under her shirt. The *MYSTERIOUS* security expert complete with guard dog, video surveillance, and quiet life, ADDS to her mystery. Abigail's past is the key to her present. Abigail is a genius with an IQ over 200 and the ONLY living witness to the a mob hit now in hiding. This is a first rate mystery. Elizabeth /Abigail is one of Nora Robert's MOST interesting heroines. Raised by an intelligent cold mother who failed to love her~Gives her a solitary lonely adult life. Her only comfort is her security dog and computer. She is both interesting and fun as we watch her BLOOM with the contact with Brooks and the others in the small community she lives by. Her mysterious past is both entertaining and facinating. The Mystery and romance move along very well and has a first rate ending. I GIVE THIS ONE 4 STARS...for Heroine we LOVE, Hero who bridges the quiet world of Abigail. What makes this one of Nora Roberts better heroines is the facinating look into a genius who discovers the simple joys of life and love as an adult.Read full review
I'm a huge sucker for anything Nora Roberts. Anything. I currently own almost every single book she's ever written. I love how deep and emotional her characters are. I also love reading a description of a character and automatically getting a picture in my head of somebody in my own life. Her characters are every day people that others can relate to and that's hard to find in other books. The Witness is about a brilliant girl, Elizabeth, who has to grow up knowing her mother has no real attachment to her. She feels nothing emotional. She's brought up knowing she has to be smart (freakishly smart) and independent. The one day she takes a chance and actually does something for herself, and tries to make friends, she witnesses a horrible crime. There's some corrupt cops and a lot of running around before she lands in a new town as a new woman, Abigail. She changes her name and basically tries to be invisible. Enter Brooks Gleason, police chief. He becomes very smitten with our lady Abigail. He loves how smart she is, how she just knows everything about everything and how blunt and unromantic she can be. The problem? He knows she's hiding something and he makes it his life goal to figure it out. I read this novel when it first came out. And while I loved most parts of the book, the character of Abigail kind of bothered me. She was smart. I mean, REALLY smart. I would read a sentence in the book and have to put it down to Google something. I was constantly becoming aware of the fact that there was a lot of things I didn't know. Another thing that bothered me was Brooks Gleason. He's the police chief and makes it known to her that he loves her. And while he would 100% run with her to anywhere she has to run to get away with the mafia-esque rogues that are chasing after her, he knows it's wrong that she's also running from the police and basically she should feel ashamed of herself. To me, he was almost rubbing it in her face that she was a fugitive because she was running for her life. I mean, if I had both mafia and cops running after me, when I was totally innocent, I'm not sure I'd want to be found either. Overall, it was still a good read.Read full review
Excellent fast moving love/hate situation among other things. Boats/diving/shipwreck/water/guns/ thieves and so much more. It keeps you at the edge of your seat until the very end. No way to know how it will finish. I loved it. Couldn't put the book down. One of my favorite writers just keeps getting better and better.

This is my first Nora Roberts Novel and i have to say, it has been a wonderful journey, loved the climax of the story. It is definitely a page turner, the first 100 pages we well paced and exciting and exhilarating, then the next few hundred pages about Brooks and Abigail was also well though out and i really loved the interlinking of the two characters and how they fall in love and finally letting down her guard to be loved by this man. The last bit of the book was like i was in a movie, the pace, the FBI scenes were well planed and executed. Overall, i would recommend this book to any thriller and romance fan, looking forward to reading more novel from Nora!
