I saw mention of this book in another book review, by this author, in the New York Times. One always hears of the good work of Mother Teresa and this book sheds some light on other aspects of her religious career. While it is obvious that the author has a negative view of her work, from the very start, he brings out aspects of her life that are not in keeping with her general image. One of her main beliefs is said to have been that "while Christ suffered it was not wrong for those under her care to also suffer and this, in someway contributed to their holiness." Thus, it is said that she maintained primitive health clinics, with little modern medications and equipment, although she was receiving vast amounts of money and could have opened Teaching Hospitals that would contribute to the wellbeing of vast numbers of the poor in India and elsewhere. Her relationships with many criminal types who are said to have used her to advance their own ends, is also spelled out in some detail. The author has an axe to grind here, but the short book does reveal much to ponder about this well known church figure and her work.Read full review
Being a Catholic myself I was skeptical to read this book at first but, since I was forced to write a paper on it I kept an open mind. Never in my life did I think that Mother Teresa was capable of half the things the book said. After some diggin of my own.......my jaw was on the floor!!! This is an amazing book and is recommended for all those that think MT should be a saint! Hitchen wrote with style and grace and although many think he may be a bit one sided I found it to be fair.
Sad....the little darling of the Catholic church was nothing more than an a conjuring fraud at best. So true was Hitchen's point that her lifelong mission was NOT to help the poor and the dying, but rather, it was to expand the Catholic empire. The image of Mother Teresa shows us how the unexamined mass media drives public perception.
Hitchens is a courageous polemicist who tells truths many people do not wish to hear. He is also a great writer of prose, and a pleasure to read.
"The Missionary Postition" was an interesting read. I never even thought about associating Mother Teresa with negative thoughts. I do not agree with everything that Hitchens claimed and wrote; however, it makes you look through a different perspective.
