Greg Iles is a poor writer, in fact, a very bad writer. These stories need much editing and condensing, at over 800 pages per book of useless filler. I would never have gotten these book but they were recommended to me. It only takes me a about several pages to get drawn into a book and I believe there is a good story here if you can get past the writing style. I cannot. Just my opinion.

Iles is a master storyteller, wordsmith and researcher of the first magnitude. His plot and characters are believable, highly developed and compelling. Only one detail mars his writing - too much information. Like Pat Conroy, he takes a half page to say what could be said in two sentences. After 1000 pages (first book of the trilogy and half of The Bone Tree) he's covered less than a week of the story. After awhile, you begin to skip along to keep from losing interest. His description of the area and historical facts are first rate. Worth the investment of time to read all three books of this trilogy.

Greg Iles is a fantastic writer. This is the 2nd book of a trilogy, its hard to put down. Can't wait to read the third!

Riveting! Absolutely Riveting. Just what I always expect from Greg Iles; just what he always delivers. No one develops characters and weaves plots and subplots like he does. How he writes about social themes that are still very much alive today, and doesn't fall victim to the same retributions unleashed by the characters in the story, is beyond me. I find myself drawn into the story so deeply that time, quite literally, warps and fades away. And before I know it I'm left sitting there, staring at the last page, anxiously awaiting the release of the next in the series.
