If there's one thing that makes Synology NAS products best in class, it's their software and support. Regular feature add-ons increase security functionality beyond the call of duty. Of course it's worth researching features point by point with competitors, but you can rely on Synology to never make you wait for important changes. In this respect, it's like comparing Apple's iPhone updates to the hodge podge world of Android. Synology is wholly dependable. Others ... well, you may be lucky and get a model that's well supported, but then again you may not. Our DS1812+ is our third Synology NAS in succession and this, more than anything else is what keeps us loyal customers. Rock solid hardware reliability doesn't hurt either :)
