I saw this on cable with my sister, and then since I like all things French I bought the dvd. We chatted the other day about the ending, movie fans that we are. She didn't get that the whole episode at the French house was part of her imagination. WARNING, DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM, IT INCLUDES A SPOILER. The authoress is at an empty house and empty village and she invents all the characters and their antics in the first 60 minutes of the film, which you don't actally know till the end of the film when the real, pudgy faced pre-teen girl with braces greets her father in his office, not the same girl. My sister, complained that she didn't get the ending, until we talked about the fact that what we're seeing is what is inside the writer's head as she writes, not any actual events. The daughter idea was planted by her editor, he couldn't go because he had to look after his daughter. After all what bestselling author would involver herself in a real life murder? Non-sensical unless you know that the majority of the movie is her work of fiction. Then the ending is clear as day. I found the film to read like a good book. The coo is that the scriptwriter has fooled you to the end. In my opinion that is fine writing. See it twice, you'll see what an excellent film this really is. Ostensibly, a film about an author who goes to a quiet french village to write a book. Her idyllic retreat is interrupted by a young seductress and a murder-or is it? Charlotte Rampling only gets better with age and gives a good performance here.
Good story about a Murder Mystery writer on hiatus at her publishers house in France. She meets his daughter shortly after arrival and begins to twist a new tale of sex, murder and mayhem. Very hot, mature.
High tension, excellent acting --- the two female protagonists sizzle! I had seen it in 2004 at an art cinema and simply wanted to add it to my collection. The ending is unexpected and mind-boggling.
