Les Stroud very successfully manages to take the viewer on a fantasy camp type survival adventure. Without a camera crew, forced to document his own seven day ordeal, we share the sense of hardship he experiences and feel relieved when he succeeds in finding relief in either food and/or water. There is a genuineness about his varied challenges that compel the viewer to imagine themselves going along for the ride; especially when he has to go for several days without eating. The expression of pure satisfaction after trapping a rabbit or other meat source, and having cooked over open flame is most apparent. For anyone trapped into the routine of suburbia, Survivorman is the next best thing to a vacation.

Les has put out a book that I believe is titled "Off The Grid" about living as he does with his wife and kids disconnected from utility companies. I admire that on a truly conservative level. Amish folks mostly are off the grid as well and though it seems odd to many, it is I believe a more rewarding way to live. I have lived in northern New England all my life so far and can tell you that the heat can be intense and the cold is a bone chilling cold that takes lives every year. Les puts himself in survival mode and films it to boot! Do you know how much extra walking that is?? This guy is tough as nails and unique. He gives some very useful ways to utilizes the most unusual items to survive from corn chip fire starters to starting a fire with airplane fuel and a 12 volt battery. Did I mention he films it all himself? Even a regular hike while filming on your own is a daunting task; he has to survive for a week and it is not a comfy week. Every episode I have seen has been amazing and I love his web site as well. lesstroud.com I believe.Read full review
If ever I am lost in the woods, stranded on a deserted island, or stuck in a snow drift, I want Les Stroud with me! As the lone star of the Discovery Channel's original series "Survivorman," this 2 disc DVD set captures Stroud in all of the first season's 9 episodes. With no film crew, Stroud is alone for a week surviving in different locales on whatever Mother Nature provides. Be amazed as you watch him build fires from scratch using several different methods! Watch in awe as his snare and deadfall traps capture prey for the hungry "survivor." If nothing else, watch Stroud play a mean harmonica! Carrying over 55 pounds of camera equipment, Stroud is the lone star and director of "Survivorman." Stroud makes for a very entertaining subject. You will be celebrating along with him as the tiny embers in his tinder bundle emerge into a flame. You will laugh as he runs from a Canadian bull-moose, until he explains how dangerous that encounter could have been. And I challenge anyone to keep a straight face as Stroud eats his squirrel bone breakfast for the camera. The only drawback of the DVD set is that there are no extras. You wish there would have been a commentary track from Stroud, deleted scenes, or even survival tips. Regardless, the 2 DVD set is a real treat and will not disappoint both survival experts and armchair survivalists.Read full review
Everything you see on the Discovery Channel plus a bonus disc. Les Stroud does it all on these DVD's. Not only does he show just how to survivor, he is also packing 60 pounds of camera gear, as he is the camera man as well. Les is great on telling it like it really is. Very well done, informational, instructional all while setting up great camera shots, all while trying to Survive. Les proves He really can do it all and he does it so very well. Can't wait for the next season to be available on DVD. Hope he thinks about including a bonus DVD of outtakes or bloopers. I'm sure some great footage never gets seen on regular TV.
Overall, the show is a great show. It shows how you can survive in different environment in a variety of ways. The person doing this is doing this solo, so the whole deal with this, he's filming this all himself with no crew and whatsoever (with the exception of them "looking out" for him when it comes to the harsh locations). Some great episodes that I would recommend would be the Arctic, as he tries to cope with the weather and puts his survival instinct on. It's all up to you to decide whether you like it or not, it's very informative and shows a lot of different techniques in terms of making fire, or making a proper shelter or just collecting any item to turn it into something burnable to make food for yourself. This is a worthwhile DVD, I recommend anyone to watch it and just enjoy for what it is, a great show.Read full review
