Superman the Animated series... what else can you say. I grew up watching this show. I cam home from school and ran straight to the TV never caring that I had homework to do. The show though short run was entertaining for me. The simple art style and great story telling by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. The story has a lot of filler episodes atleast that's how I feel. I've never really read the superman comics(I'm a batman fan ;P) so I am unsure as to how much they actually use from the comic but being a Bruce Timm fan I came to like the show. I found that the "filler" episodes were much more entertaining to me that any of the i guess you would call streamline story. Once again this is only personal opinion. The bonus features and commentary is awesome to hear. Lots of niffty little tid bits I never knew. Physically though the packaging is a little weird or more so I'm just not found of it. For each season there is a pictured DVD that says Season 1,2, etc but the rest of the disks have no print on them. They are those clear disks that you have to flip one side for side A and side B. I hate those because I am to stupid to know which way goes up or down. Other than that its a great buy. I miss the GOOD cartoons of the yester-years... not the crap I see on TV now a days... man I feel old now.Read full review
From the great Batman writer, Paul Dini, comes this fabulous complete collection of another one of DC's popular superheroes, Superman. This was produced during the era of a golden age of cartoons (debatable as some suggest the 80s were). Moreover, it was at a time when cartoons started to become a serious phenomenon on television, especially on cable. This TV series... I ignored in favour of Batman: the Animated Series, another fantastic cartoon. This show has a fairly similar feel and appearance to that show, having similar animation and character modelling, as well as very well done characters, both protagonists and antagonists. It is amazing as to how deep these villains can be too, and Dini really makes them shine with fantastic monologue and dialogue. Rarely did I not feel these characters. They all felt real to me. I was impressed for example as to how they depicted Brainiac...as this cold, calculating humanoid computer who will do anything to accumulate the universe's knowledge for his own gain, even if it means destroying an entire planet in the process. They changed him from the comics, and to avoid spoilers, I will just mention that he is responsible for a major event in this series. Lex Luthor is also well executed, but his depiction here makes him seem even more dangerous for he practically built Metropolis and is technically a high profile political figure. He loves attention and the reason I say 'dangerous' is that he will do anything to take Superman out of the spotlight, as Luthor felt he was stealing it, even if it means destroying Superman. He could built a robotic army if he really wanted to. Now Darkseid is really dangerous...from another version of Hell does this demon arise. His aim is to spread chaos and rule all universes. He is considered the darkest supervillain that Superman will ever encounter. There are other fabulous villains such as Metallo, Livewire, Bizarro (a poor man's Superman clone), Parasite, Toyman. Interestingly, there is no General Zod, but there are equivalent Kryptonian criminals such as Mala and General Jax-Ur, so we can make do with them. They are still very cool. What is very notable about this series unlike his previous depictions is that the writers wanted to make Superman feel believable 'real'. They wanted him to be feel far more threatened. So you will notice that the fights he gets in are going to be competitive just like Batman, his powers are limited to a select few, and he can be possibly killed. A smart move to make the character feel more real. You will find many cool cameos from other DC universes. Who else other than Batman? There are a couple more, but you will have to find them out. Along with this collection is a great collection of interviews and teasers that are just an icing on the cake, all collated from the DVD volumes. (You can tell by the disc designs that they come straight from those packages. WB! haha) You will get to hear some awesome insights by the creators of the show. Definitely worth at least one watch. Overall, I was very satisfied with the product. It was very cheap when I got it, so for what it was worth, it definitely is worth it, especially if you are an avid Superman, DC and/or cartoon fan. Even as a fan of entertainment you can find something you like about this. It just feels so reminiscent of Batman: TAS that I could not help but stop watching it. Well done Dini, and to the rest of the contributors of this fantastic show!Read full review
