This is not a cartoon but puppet animation. I watched this as a kid and it was one of my favorites so I purchased it to watch again & again. You've got to get past the technology of the time period and the special effects of time period i.e. the strings used by the puppeteers. The series also has engineering and physics facts included in the dialog which is beyond kids and kind of educational. Once you get into the series, you watch it like they are real can live their adventure. Kind of emulates real life as puppets are holding/smoking cigars and cigarettes, shooting guns for protection (on occasion). So if you're a WUSS, goody two shoes don't watch this and then complain. This is Cool, great stuff, helping people and good versus evil. Nice concept!
Supercar is a supermarionation series about a car that was years ahead of it's time. The main character of the series is a car that is able to race on land, through the sky, or under the sea. They called it "the marvel of the age." The series ran in the 1960's. This series was not greatly popular because it only ran for 39 episodes, and it was the first of it's kind. It was later followed by more popular shows, such as "Thunderbirds" and "Stingray." This series is actually so little known that my brother and I were starting to think my father was crazy! He kept telling us and other people about the show and asking them if they have heard of it. This went on for a couple years, and we could not find anyone who had seen it or heard of it, so we just assumed that it was a figment of his imagination, until we found it on ebay. I purchased the DVD set for him from ebay. We can't tease him about it anymore, but he is going to be so excited about getting it that it is worth being wrong. The DVD set itself is excellent, especially for someone who remembers it from their childhood. It contains every episode made in the order they were originally broadcast. It is digitally remastered, and contains a commentary, a special featurette, and a colored picture gallery. This DVD set contains almost 17 hours, plus the extras, of childhood memories for any father or grandfather that remembers this series.Read full review
I certainly couldn't write of produce anything better. So who am I to complain? But as a Gerry Anderson fan. I'd like to voice my opinion to his early works. I know it was ground breaking stuff when it came out. But how does it stand the test of time, and can it be watched today? My opinion is no. I just think it's too primitive for it to be enjoyed. If I were you. I'd start my Gerry Anderson collection with his next series 'Fireball XL5' and go from there through 1969s 'Secret Service'. 1970s Gerry Anderson also don't appeal to me either. Thanks Gerry and Silvia for all you've done, but I'll stick with my mid to late 60s Gerry Anderson productions. These are the best childrens series ever written and produced in the entire history of television programming. Quite an honor. It's just 'Supercar', doesn't cut it for me.Read full review
This is a program, I grew up with. The dream as a young boy, of having a flying car, like Supercar, made this show, top of my, "Have to Watch" program list. This is a must have, for any Supercar enthusiast. The collection includes every show ever broadcast, and you can watch from the first episode of Supercar to the last. This was Gerry Andersons first big series hit, with the wonderful Supermarionation making the puppets almost come alive for all the children who watched. I didn't care if I saw the strings or not, this was just too cool! I vividly remember more and more details, as I went through the episodes, bring a smile to my face with each one. The complete DVD set includes, commentaries, a featurette, color production stills, and interactive menus. If you watched Supercar, as I did, or would just like to see one of the early successes of Gerry Anderson for yourself, you owe it to yourself to grab the set. Get the popcorn ready, grab the family and enjoy!Read full review
I’ve waited for 50 years to see these adventures again. It’s amazing how well they were created using 50’s technology. They brought back fond memories of my childhood watching Supercar. Although they were created in black and white, I wish those who re-created the DVDs would have offered a computerized color version. But regardless, I’m so thankful to have found the entire series again. I showed the first episode to my 7 and 10 year old grandsons. At first I got the expected “those are puppets”, “that’s dumb”, “you can see the strings”, etc. But now every time they visit they ask to see another episode. I only show them one episode at a time ad they can’t wait to see the next one. They even know the characters ( I hear them discussing MasterSpy) and of course they have memorized the theme song which they sing when playing with their toys pretending they are Supercar. I highly recommend this DVD set to anyone who loved the TV show back in the ‘50s.Read full review
