This is a useful introduction to the topic. It covers padded work, detached work, and needle lace. Jane Nicholas' skill is beautiful, and the samples of her work are lovely and inspiring. I find the organizational relationship of the colored pictures of the projects to the techniques a bit illogical, but thankfully there is a good index to direct you to all the information you need to make a bee, or dragonfly, or particular floral motif. It is a book with more words than images, so if you rely on detailed diagrams for needlework rather than description of technique, this might not be the book for you. Also, if you are thinking of buying this book and other books on stumpwork by the same author, be aware that this title, Stumpwork Embroidery Fruits and Flowers (1996), and her second book, Stumpwork Embroidery Designs and Projects (1998) are duplicated together in a third more recently published book: The Complete Book of Stumpwork Embroidery (2005). If you want all of the info, buy both of the first two books, or simply buy the third book. There is no reason to buy all three.Read full review
