Have read a number of books by Robert Leckie. He does tremendous research and adds information and highlights that are little known to most. This book is both informative and entertaining. His description of the battles and many of the heroic men involved is very insightful. It is at times exciting, frightening and tragic. Would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Marine Corps and their part in World War II.

I had recently re-read Leckie's excellent work, "Helmet For My Pillow" and decided to give "Strong Men Armed" a look. I'm glad I did! It is an excellent history of the Marine trials in the Pacific but written not as a dry factual recording of dates and places but rather as a glimpse into the lives and experiences of the men who participated in the difficult struggle to stem the tide of Japanese imperialism. It is an excellent tribute to those men and a fitting addition to any American's library especially now as we remember the 70th anniversary of the beginning of America's offensive in the Pacific with the landings on Guadalcanal. Written in a style that's exciting and easy to read while including enough of a personal perspective from one who was actually there, this book rates as an excellent opportunity to be entertained while learning a great deal of history. Highly recommended!Read full review
