The Broadway revival is devastating, and so is the musical performance preserved on this recording. Raul Esparza's superior vocal technique is always at the service of his emotionally wrenching performance as Bobby, the bachelor who keeps emotional commitment at a distance by ignoring his own need. All the performers are excellent, as are the new orchestral arrangements. When you consider that all the instruments are played by the actors (something that must be seen to be believed in the show), the musical excellence of the presentation of one of Sondheim's most consistent and successful scores is even more impressive. Oh, and "Marry Me a Little," cut before the original production opened on Broadway, is restored and closes Act I. It was worth waiting 30-plus years to hear this great song in context as sung by Esparza.Read full review
This is a great recording. I'm familiar with the 1970 version. But this is different (well, the same songs, different.). Raul Esparza is magnificent. All the others too. If you LOVE Sondheim, then you might very well love this too.
