Jerry Goldsmith outdid himself with this one. The track entitled "Life is a Dream" showcases a mature and fully realized main title theme from Star Trek the Motion Picture as well as the beloved Klingon theme. The opening title is a showcase of how Goldsmith can glide from a main title sequence (featuring the ST:TMP theme) to a pleasant and inspiring melody originally conceived of to highlight the beauty of Yosemite National Park. From there the tracks typically showcase the action sequences of the movie. Many of them are quite good on their own merit with no knowledge of the film necessary to enjoy them. The soundtrack ends with a vocal track (Yes, I know, you wanted Goldsmith NOT Hiroshima). In the film, the song was sung by Nichelle Nichols (Uhura). For the soundtrack the New Age band is called in to fill her shoes. Although a comparison/contrast would have been nice we have what we have. I rather enjoy the song after listening to it for a time and hopefully you will too. It still seems rather discordent to place a vocal track in a Trek soundtrack but they did do it on another Goldsmith score as well (ST: First Contact). Overall, I have to say that this rates as one of my favorite Trek Filmscores. James Horner's ST:the Wrath of Khan still rates higher but this is a superb effort. I definately recommend it!Read full review
