Nice phone, compact. HOWEVER... even though the i530 User's Manual says you can use the phone as Direct Talk. Mine (NEXTEL VERSION) doesn't have the "Two-way Radio" feature. (RATS!!) I referred to the Motorola i530 User Manual before purchasing two of these phones in hopes of setting up direct talk. To say the least, I'm disappointed. SO... Going to donate the pair to a Missionary whom will be traveling to countries that utilize the network. I don't know how long the battery life is... I did order 8 smaller batteries... so whomever gets the donated phones will have plenty of battery power.

This phone has a strong and sturdy exterior casing which makes it great for contractors or anybody in an industrial style trade. The ruberization to the plastic shell give it military grade shock resistance. It also has a extendable antenna, with Motorola's already well known reception, it makes is great for getting signal strength. The bad is the only two networks that can support this phone is Nextel and Boost. Do not let anybody tell you that because this phone is unlocked it can except any carrier that takes a sim card. The truth of the matter is the phone has IDEN recognition built into its software to work with the walky-talkie feature and there is now way to disable the walkie-talkie feature from the phone itself. So if you bought this phone and tried to stick a different sim card in it and you get a message that says "enter special or secret code now", then you probally need to get Nextel or Boost service or forget using the phone. If it says Please wait to enter code, you will have the same problem.Read full review
What can you say it's a phone. I used a company supplied I530 for a few years. Before that my record is 5 cell phones so far distroyed at various construction jobs. Many because of dropping. I work construction and it's a perfect job to test the merits of a phone. I always wondered why it really wasn't followed up by another until resently with the brute. With the brute I just don't understand that with it's limited features it costs more than a Blackberry. I'll stick with one I know works. I give it a 4 star because compared to todays phones it has very limited features, but it's for working people, not those who sit behind a desk playing breakout. It is what it says rugged, and long lasting.
The i530 is a dependable cell phone with easy to use direct connect features. I have used one for many years and now buy other used i530 phones for parts to keep it running. The main fail point of this phone is the Mic. but it can be replaced easly if you have the correct size T wrench to take the back off the phone.
These phones are currently the most available, durable, and highest value replacement phones for the nextel network. They have all of the important features (600 number phone book is my favorite), and most importantly can take a severe beating. I am a contractor, and it is not a question of if i will have to replace phones, but how often. It is only a matter of switching out the sim card, and the phone is ready to go (however Nextel would probably like you to call and do what they call a "sim swap" so they can match up the serial # on the phone). I buy these phones often, keep a spare or two around for emergencies, and would without hesitation recommend this phone for anyone not concerned with the following: -This unit is not very stylish (thick and plain compared to newer "slim" phones. -does not have a camera. -does not have a "color" screen (black text with a backlit green screen. -does not run java application like many other nextel phones (no games). The i530 is all about work, and is as durable as anything else I've seen at any price.Read full review
