This receiver has an excellent FM section that brings in stations and the sound is remarkably clean! cd quality clean. I don't listen to radio since there are no classical music stations in our area now but I did check it out wearing Hifiman planar headphones that reveal any distortions and there were none! The amplifier reproduces CD quality sound very nicely. The only thing is the bass & treble controls only bring a VERY small change to the sound. The bass readout on the screen shows an increase of up to +6 but certainly not db. There is a great variety of surround sound options but you go through menus that are consonants only & if you don't know what they mean (unlikely that you will) you have to watch the screen display to determine what speakers are being activated, then listen to see how. You may be able to download a PDF type manual from Sony. Haven't checked yet. Altogether I would give this receiver 4 stars for all that it can do & if you like the sound pretty "flat". If you use an EQ device you can change this for 2 channel listening but because external EQ devices inherently seem to change phase relationships electronically their use will destroy correct surround sound. Signal decoders for surround use electrical phase differences to determine what is front, center & surround channels. An external EQ device throws these decoders way off! However, considering the receiver costs about the same as 2 dvds I find it very hard to find fault!Read full review
I shoot jewelry for a neighbor lady down the street, charging her a batch of cookies for my efforts. She keeps insisting on paying me, but I tell her I don't want/need her money. I mean, she's a neighbor, you know? But I digress...anyway, while at her house the other day (picking up a batch of said cookies), we got to talking about computers and home electronics and stuff; she mentioned that she wanted to sell her existing home theater system and go wireless. When I asked her how much she wanted for it, she said I could have it por gratis since I wouldn't take her money. Needless to say, she didn't have to repeat her offer. It's on my corner workstation, connected to my Denon DVD player, sat receiver, desktop computer and Viewsonic NX2232W HDTV/monitor (I've yet to hook my Sharp VCR up, since I need to scrounge up another short piece of coaxial cable). I got the four front/back left/right satellite speakers, center speaker, powered subwoofer, a ton of speaker wire and all the cables, user manual and remote to boot. I have limited space, and have yet to find a place for the rear speakers; but so far it sounds great ("Terminator" is the movie to play to check out your setup). I hooked my computer's sound to it with a 1/8" headphone jack to red & white RCA plug cable, and connected it to the "CD" inputs. The only shortcoming I can think of is the lack of an HDMI connection. Well worth the price I paid. Oh, btw...this is a discontinued model. Google it if you need a user manual, how-to and /or tech tips, or troubleshooting. The info is still out there.Read full review
