I bought this receiver for its HDMI switching capability in my home theater room. Unfortunately, it didn't work out quite the way I had hoped. I wanted to be able to switch between my HDTV tuner and Sony Blu Ray Disc player and output to my front projection Sanyo projector. My projector only has a DVI input, so I used a HDMI to DVI cable for the connection between the receiver's HDMI output and the projector's DVI input. Unfortunately, the HDMI switching capability does not working when hooked up with a HDMI to DVI cable and the instruction manual states that this may be a problem. Unfortunately I did not know this ahead of time. So I just hooked up the Blu Ray player directly to the Projector and use an optical cable to the receiver for the sound. If I want to use the HDTV tuner, I'll just have to disconnect the cable from the Blu Ray disc player and hook it to the HDTV tuner. Not a show stopper, but it defeats the purpose of why I purchased the receiver to begin with. The only other thing that I do not like about this receiver is that not all of the speaker inputs have banana type connectors. If you upgrade to the Sony STR DG820, then all of the speaker inputs have the banana type connector inputs plus you get an extra HDMI input. One thing I did like about this receiver other than the price is that it has a microphone forauto-calibration of the speakers. I have a 7.1 set up and it worked great. As I said before it's a nice receiver for the price, but if I had to do it all over again I'd go with the DG820.Read full review
I bought this unit to update my sound system to the latest technology. My previous receiver was a Denon AV 2600 which was the better unit in the Denon line but it didn't have some of the newer features like HDMI, Dolby 7.1 etc. Now I have all this and I love it. I also liked the way BigBuy City handled the whole transaction. They are very professional.
What I really like about this unit is HDMI thruput. No longer do I need seperate optical cables for dolby digital sound as it all comes directly from my Verizon Fios cable box and HD DVD player. In addition, the system automatically recognizes speakers connected and worked beautifully right out of the box with a minimal amout of configuration. My current configuraion is a Dolby Digital 6 speaker system (5.1) and the sound quality is absolutely fantastic. The price for this unit was incredible $236 coupled with a 25% rebate though Microsoft live.com can't be beat anywhere.
Unit received very clean. As is usual, you have a 90+ page manual to download. Lots of buttons with questionable functions, which is common. Aftermarket remote sourced from different vendor. Everything seems to work and that's what counts.
