The Sony receiver works well when using the optical input from my blu ray player. It also has an optical output which I use to connect it to another Sony receiver. It runs a little hot so I placed two small fans to dissipate the heat.

This is an old model, but in its day, it was among the best in its price range. If you don't need HDMI inputs and outputs and are happy with optical for sound (which is still excellent quality). Even a model of this age can be very good. I had bought one new many years ago, then had a problem with it's outputs shutting-off. So I decided to get another (used this time) that's exactly the same model

I've had a STR-DE945 since 9/2000. Sadly, my old unit was damaged in a move. The one I bidded on is just as excelent as my old unit. I got the 2009 updated cousin to the STR-DE945 and it didn't come close to the STR-DE945. Others may disagree, but minus the HDMI inputs, this unit remains Sony's best. Ease of operation,, multi control speaker control, you name it. I love it and I've looked at other 5.1 units, but the STR-DE945 blows the others away. This unit was when Sony produced quality, and with the STR-DE945, I wonder why Sony doesn't add the HDMI inputs to the STR-DE945. Only 2 Sony receivers have a turntable input. CD's are great, but everyone knows a LP will always sound better and LP's are slowly returning. Tape deck..Not on the new ones. VCR inputs(yes, some people still have them.) So what makes the STR-DE945 so great? It has everything except the HDMI's, and Blue Ray's and HD-DVR connects to all High Def T.V.'s. THERE'S ARE STILL A FEW OUT THERE, AND WITH THE REMOTE, YOU WON'T BELIEVE THE CRISP, CLEAR SOUND. SONY SHOULD TAKE NOTICE. Set correctly, you'll think you're in a movie theater with the best sound! By the way, I have two(2) RM-LJ304 remotes.I'll be selling the extra one, so if anyone needs one, I'll be selling for the 1st time.Read full review
I've own my STR-DE945 for well over 10 years. Lots of optional gear that I loved. 110 watts per channel Dolby Digital making every watt count. This unit has definitively help piss off alot of neighbors over the years. On the sad side, the A and B speaker switch gave up about a year ago so had stop using the b side $75 fix. Its survived a power surge and still working. But I'm in the market to upgrade. Its a well built Receiver and if I didn't want 7.2 and wifi, I would keep it till the day I die.
This receiver is everything I was looking for. 5.1 surround is just fine with me. I didn't want/need the HDMI inputs, it has gobs of optical inputs, which works just fine and allows me to have the setup be "parallel" to the TV audio so that when the wife or I want to watch basic TV, we don't have to go through the hassle of powering up the surround. Yet, it's there and sounds great when we want the theater for a movie. I found the setup/tailoring flexibility with this unit to be very good, allowing me to tailor the volume and EQ from the amp to each channel (front/center/rear)individually. Helps balance out a system with speakers from multiple sources, and really helps me make the center channel vocals stand out. All in all, I'm quite happy with the purchase, and extremely please that I was able to get this one rev older technology (which still suits me just fine) for what I deemed to be a bargain price.Read full review
