Designed by amp god Nelson Pass, the Adcom GFA-555 power amplifier is an iconic, bomb proof amp, sounds fantastic with no excuses anywhere in the frequency band. I've owned one since the original release back in the 80s, and never had an issue with it. I bought a second one recently to serve as power amp for a passive sub (NHT 1259 driver (4ohm) / 3.2 cu ft enclosure) and it works perfectly in this application. More than enough current to motor the driver and keep it under control. Bass is tight, realistic and has authority. It never sounds sloppy. Currently driving Magnepan 1.6 speakers with my original 555, this amp has no problem driving the 4ohm load, and sounds great doing it. It sounds sweet, has good presentation of instruments within the soundstage, and that soundstage has good depth and width on recordings that possess it. I've owned a lot of gear over the years, including tube gear, and the Adcom can compete with all of it. Is it 100% perfect? Nope. Is it 90% of the way there at a fraction of the price of Mac, Krell, etc. Definitely! Choose a used one wisely, get one that's been well taken care of and it'll serve you well. At this point the caps are reaching the end of their service life and likely will need to be replaced at a point, but no worries, parts are readily available and their stupid easy to work on - either by you if you're knowledgable or by your favorite service tech. Musical Concepts and Big Sky Audio also offer well respected upgrades for these amps to make them even better than new. Enjoy!Read full review

I use three of the GFA-555 in my home theater system. I have an Onkyo 3312CI receiver that has the preamp out feature and I one amp bridged mono for the center channel speaker. One amp in stereo mode for the front left and right and another for the rear surround speakers. Adcom amps are beasts inside. A very large torrodial transformer, Four huge power supply electrolytic Caps that clean up the power and store massive amounts of energy for those cannon blasts, earthquakes, bombs blowing up etc. Get you some of this!

I've owned an ADCOM GFA-5500 for almost 20 years. Combined with the GFP-555 II and 515 AC Conditioner feeding to B&W Matrix 805 Reference Monitors (on Transparent MusicWave Cables bridged in Bi-Wire mode), this amp delivers everything desired with lots of room to spare. I cannot imagine how what decibel level it can produce beyond 60% on the volume dial (that is already well into neighbor complaining territory), as that is as far as I've ever taken it, but at that level it seems to be just warming up and delivers clean sound with great detail and dynamic range from top to bottom...and that is on two way "bookshelf" speakers (albeit one of the best designs ever made). Rock, jazz, classical, etc., this amp is accurate without any harshness. The most tube-like solid state amp I have ever heard. Whatever the source, it sends it through as neutrally as any amp. It begs for audiophile recordings and you will be rewarded in playing such. It will show up poorly recorded source material as well. Faithful to reality, it does not color sound. Just sends it out cleanly as-is, with headroom beyond home stereo volume tolerances. It's what I wanted and it has always delivered. Inside is wall to wall quality and massive heat sinks that can get very warm - as stated by others, best to keep in area where air gets in. Mine has never overheated or distorted. The heat normal. In fact, it thrives best after it warms up for at least 15 minutes. The sound sets in and you will be hard pressed to pull yourself away. Brilliant design, great power reserves, audiophile accurate sound amplification, relatively inexpensive and rock solid reliability (never has needed servicing), you will NOT be disappointed.Read full review

Previous amps include Onkyo A-RV401, Carver Silver Seven Tube Series 1.5; other current amps include two Adcom GFA-565 monoblocs and a Mitsubishi DA-A10DC. I originally got the 555 to biamp the bottom of my Mirage 790's, with the DA doing the highs. Sounded fantastic until, listening to "Du Hast" at a very moderate level, the voice coil on one of the woofers melted clean thru the cone! Fearing DC at the outputs, I put the meter on them and they were in spec. Then hooked the 555 full range to a set of Mission Argonauts that had been hitched to the monoblocs; sounded fantastic until one of the low woofers blew (same channel, low volume, sound familiar?). Put the 555 in que to visit the shop, popped the top and looks like a tiny bit of electrolyte leaking going on. Lack of a speaker protection circuit is toxic considering the propensity of the caps in these vintage Adcoms to spew over time... In conclusion, the 555 is an excellent value for the right price IF THE CAPS HAVE BEEN UPDATED!!! If not, the cost of this should be considered before purchase. I would highly recommend downloading the service manual and perform DC output test BEFORE connecting a vintage Adcom to speakers (BBQ'd woofer is a lousy smell and leads to depression). Once one is sure of the circuitry integrity, hook that Bad Boy up to a decent set of speakers and enjoy some damn fine classic solid state HiFi.Read full review
