I just purchased my second Sony Clie PEG-NX70V. My first Clie was purchased for Christmas in 2002, but recently suffered catastrophic damage when it fell out of my shirt pocket and hit the sidewalk. I liked the first one so much, I decided to get another. Positives: The display quality on the 180 degree flip-screen is excellent and the built-in keyboard is priceless. The Palm software interface program that is kept on my laptop is easy to use and update, and HotSync operations can be done in a matter of seconds. Using the headphones that come with the unit, audio sound quality is outstanding and rivals that of music specific MP3 players. Infrared information sharing with other wireless devices is painless and the TV/VCR remote control function has good range. Battery life is excellent except when playing music files, which will consume the entire battery charge within 90 minutes. Negatives: The camera resolution is not that great, but is sufficient. Too bad the videos are stored as MQV files because I have not found a player that can process them apart from the Clie unit itself. It would be nice to be able to play the stored video clips on my PC. MP3 music files must be converted to MSA files and stored on a Magic Gate memory stick. The SonicStage MP3 conversion interface is rather difficult to use. I use my Clie every day at work and would be forced to carry around a 5-inch binder without it. By loading on the optional "Documents To Go" software, I have all of my Excel spreadsheets Word documents at my disposal. From the voice recorder to the freestyle memo pad, this unit will do it all and is at the top of the PDA list in my opinion.Read full review
I bought the Clie PEG-NX70V for my wife 4 weeks ago. Its great. But I have two complains regarding to Hot Sinc software instlled in my XP PC. First, it is a bit unreliable, sometime works sometiems it does not. When it does not work I have to restart the software. The second problem is more sirious for me but it will only affect users of two clies as me with one PC. I have a CLie Peg Sj30 that i use almost every days since I boutht it in 2003. After i installed the PEG-NX70V I can not longer back it up. In the small print of the NX70V says that it might not be compatible with other models which turn out to be the case for me. Now I am in the dilema: SHould I buy another PC so each PDA can be back up, or should I buy another PDA hoping that the new will be compatible with the NX70V.Read full review
Except maybe the PEG-NX80V (though I never actually tried one). I have had mine for about 2 years (it was already several years old when I got it). It died on me last night and I am about to buy another just like it. However, don't count on it for mp3 playback. The Sony software it comes with will not play mp3 files unless they are stored on special DRM encumbered memory sticks (cost 2x more) that will not let you copy the mp3 file back off. Any kind of music or video playback also consumes the batteries very quickly.
Magnificent device, despite Sony not putting enough support strength into the screen rotation arm. Thoroughly excellent device, made even more so by the fact that Ebay members are selling it - in total - for a veritable bargain price from what Sony's exorbitant prices used to sell it for.
It is perfect for my use- a mini laptop for text documents, lists, addresses etc and can fit right in my purse! I can view everything on the go or on the PC. Backs up easily also.
