I bought this Sony Bdp-bx58 3D Blu-Ray Player to have access to my Netflix account without having to hook up my laptop to my tv. The connection to my router is weak when my laptop is connected at the same time. The Browser is worthless. I really don't know how this compares to others, since I've never owned a product that is similar to this. In the end I'd still recommend this product, it does its job. I use it daily. I use it for Netflix, Pandora, Crackle, YouTube, among other apps that were already installed. Ebay had a great price. It was very easy to set-up and sets up in very little time (Although connecting your Netflix, Youtube, Pandora, etc accounts will take some time to complete, but you only have to do it once).
I bought 2 of these off ebay. One for my 55" 3D Samsung in the bedroom and one for my 200" Theatrical widescreen in the living room (front projector). I wanted 3D because of my Samsung, and I plan on replacing my Epson 6500ub with the Epson 5010 1080p 3D projector in the near future. I also wanted WiFi for streaming music and movies via DNLA from my Windows server in the bedroom to my 5.2 AV system in the living room. And I needed something to stream Netflix and to Play my Blu-Ray collection with. I did have my PS3's that did all the above, but they turned out to have a predetermined TOD (time to die) of approximately 1.5-2 years. I hope these last longer than my PS3's. The build quality of these is about the same as any other brand in the same price range. What's seems to be different is the amount of web sites available on this thing...there's a BUNCH of them. I'm not sure how many because I've yet to scroll to the end of the online Video websites. Also, this player supports more File formats than my Samsung SmartTV so may more of the movies I have on my Server can stream without being transcoded. Blu-Rays look great and 3D works just fine with my Samsung Active 3D glasses. Now for the bad. I could not get this working on my network (AT&T 2WIRE WiFi Gateway). To get it to work I had to find the primary and secondary IP addresses for DNS by logging onto my 2WIRE and copying all the info including the IP address assigned to the player, Subnet Mask, etc. and manually entering it into the network settings on both players. You may not have to do that if you have a different Modem or Router. I haven't had a problem since I did that. Overall, I'm happy with the features and performance of this player as it's more than just a Blu-Ray player. It's a multimedia server in itself. I just hope it has better longevity than the PS3.Read full review

1st day took the player out and hooked it to the TV. 1) Used the included HDMI cable to connect 2) Used the wireless Wifi Connection to my local network. (Approx. 15mb connection speed to the Wireless) 3) Downloaded the Latest software from Sony through the player 4) Setup Netflix - Had someone elses ID setup for Netflix, uninstalled the ID and used my own. 5) Setup Amazon - Still not complete having issues resetting the Id on the Unit. 6) Setup Internet Web Browsing and set the correct options for viewing. 7) Tried to watch ESPN3 through the Browser but could not get it to work - Possible not enough resources for the system. Overall Experience: This is my first Blu-Ray, I think it is fine for the price. Watching Netflix took time to load and cache will try hard wiring the unit to see if bandwidth is the issue. DVD play great through the unit and start fast. No issue with the player part.Read full review
I bought this since I haven't upgraded to a Blu-Ray player yet, and they are very affordable now. The additional bonus was that this player can stream media from the internet and from your computer. The interface isn't great, but it gets the job done. I was disappointed to find out that even though this player was old enough to still include component output, it was new enough that HD output was limited to HDMI only. I do really like the iPod app you can download for free to control the unit. Mine didn't come with a remote, so it was actually great that it didn't matter. I also noticed Blu-Ray discs are formatted differently, so occasionally you get one that doesn't work. Report those instances to Sony, and they can look into it and update the driver.
