I have successfully baked most of the recipes in this book on the first try, but have not tried any pie and tart recipes. Before, I bought this book, I was discouraged from baking, because there are only 2 people in my household including me and I am not comfortable wasting food or overeating. I had no baking or cooking experience before purchasing this book. Now I bake to relieve stress - really! Pros - Ingredients are relatively easy to find. - Steps are easy to follow and the measurements are exact. - Author takes the time to explain basics in first few pages. - The average time that I spend on baking a recipe is an 45 minutes to hour including the baking time. Cons - The most difficult items to find are the tart pans. Tip: - I use mini-springform pans, instead of cans as noted in her book. Hope this helps!Read full review
Debby Nakos has written a book that is long over-due. Like other reviewers, I love to bake but feel guilty after polishing off a dozen cookies or half a cake. The recipes are perfectly portioned and easy to follow and those that I have tried have turned out perfect each time, which sort of amazed me! I loved the Mississippi Mud Cake and the Vanilla Spice Crumb Cakes....so easy and so good, and several of the cookies....yum! I loved the Almond Cherry Scones and the Apple-Nut Oatmeal Muffins. I haven't tried the pies, tarts or puddings, but they are next on my list. Don't feel guilty about doubling a certain favorite recipe......there are times one is not enough!
I borrowed Small-Batch Baking at the local library. I immediately fell in love with it! I am a weight-watcher, so smaller portions are idea.Through this book, I don't have to have alot of batter left over to throw away, and I can bake just about anything in a smaller portion. Plus, you don't have to buy special pans to do the recipes, she explains how you can re-use cans for pans (great way to recycle)! I love the book and will NEVER give it away or lose it (like I do so many other recipes). Thank you Debby Maugans Nakos for this book, I'd love to see more like it!
Good recipes, have plenty marked for making. Made the apple crumble pie, it did make two and the basic pastry. Turn out really good, the basic pasty is made in the food processor. I was very pleased and even more pleased that I had no leftovers, that get old. Most of the cookie recipes make about 6 cookies, nothing like doing cookie sheet after cookie sheet and standing around waiting for everything to get done. Just be sure to follow correct measurements for great results. Pretty good book.
